Len Elmore is gone. That's good news. I hope his broadcasting career is over.
Former FSU QB Danny Kanell got the axe, but somehow that Gator Jesse Palmer hasn't found his true calling - selling helium balloons and tie-dyed t-shirts at the beach - yet?
McMurphy is big for .com content and Kannell did several radio and TV shows. One of which had his name in the show.

Fuhrer Mickey must not be pleased with income levels.

And this all flies in the face of ESPN's attempts to create cults of personality and craft their biggest shows around them. Remember it's not just SportsCenter .... It's @Night with SVP. It's at the 6 with insert "urban" themes and hosts you've never heard of here.

And despite all this shuffling around ... the only non-live sports events worth watching are PTI, GameDay, and College Football Final.
I don't watch ESPN except for a few selected games.

I never watch non-live sports programming and haven't for years and years.

I wish these folks well, but the ESPN "news" is pretty meaningless to me.

I think Jesse Palmer has a gig on the Food Network.

Good - maybe he can leverage that into a career as a cake-pop vendor (not that I would buy anything from him).

From what I've read by those who have sources, these layoffs were not demanded by Disney to cut costs. This is ESPN figuring out where they can save money in order to keep paying rights fees down the line.

And I think you're somewhat off base to say that it "flies in the face of ESPN's attempts to create cults of personality and craft their biggest shows around them" - while McMurphy, Kanell, Dana O'Neil, Karl Ravech, Ed Werder and the like are certainly known quantities in the sports media realm, none of those who have been let go are people helming shows that drive numbers (maybe Kanell is the exception here).

Most of them are either writer/reporter types or relatively generic studio hosts. Yes, some were long-tenured or were go-to names for news, but those are people I imagine ESPN thinks are easily replaceable with someone who commands a lower salary. Whether that's the case is up for debate, but that certainly seems to be the idea here.
05-stirthepot Will we even notice that they are gone? I know that I do not care. 07-coffee3
They kept Andrea Adelson didn't the, hope so! She's actually legit....unlike some others....

Sorry Mark, but his future career is in modeling poorly fitted suits for jocks that don't have a wife (or at least a wife who cares that her husband doesn't know how to dress) or a clue. Eh! He's Canadian anyway!

Come on, JR - you know Gators are meant to hang out near the beach! and it's obvious Palmer's mental aptitude is best suited to the balloon and t-shirt trade...

McMurphy has connections...he'll land on his feet somewhere. When he releases a tidbit it is usually spot on.

ESPN is changing their audience demographic...pretty obvious. We'll see if it works for them.
A lot of college guys getting their walking slips. ESPN will probably put their college reporting off onto the conference networks to save $.
Andy Katz is gone as well....

You may be correct about this. If you only have your folks talking about your product it cuts down on criticism. The problem is objectivity goes out the window.

A side note about McMurphy is that he was one of the key people following realignment. If he is no longer needed that may be associated with ESPN's understanding that as a subject it's close to being over.

BTW, I too think he lands somewhere respectable. He might well be one who becomes a spokesperson for a conference network.
