What's the deal with Barnes? He's, and I quote, "the hottest coach in America," but no one wants him? Some Aggie fans have mentioned him in passing but no one really wants him either. Whats the deal. All the accolades, all the awards, past successes, NIT deep run, and nothing. Why? Is it a race thing? Is it because he's only 51 and looks like 71? Seriously, what's the issue? Why didn't UNM go for a guy like him who actually won the WAC, won post season games, and yet, went for rookie Paul Weir?
I honestly have no idea. I am happy though. I hope he stays at CSUB for a while more. I was surprised UNM didn't at least give him an interview. Possible that the media was just starting ****, wouldn't be surprised either way. If he keeps it up he will be in the running for a P5 job. I don't think he will be interested in NMSU though, it would be a lateral move. Also the pay will be about the same. He really wants to get back to P5.

Maybe crap media just says... (serioysly), or maybe he HAS had some informal talks (phone conversations) and terms havent been enough to budge him.

Currently mobile....at the San Luis coast.
If UNM offered Barnes $625,000.00 Barnes would look like a real roadrunner because he would be out of Bakersfield so fast your head would spin. Barnes has a lot to prove cause he has had some pretty bad years as a head coach. I think if Barnes has one two more good years he will be history. That is the life of a WAC school or any mid major school that has a successful head coach.
The fact so many schools seemed interested this year makes me think he leaves next year, unless CSUB takes a major step back in 2017-18

I think we should be as good as last year. We lost a lot but have great replacements that played a lot last year. Durham will take over for Basile, Shon Briggs who had a stellar NIT will take over for Airington and probably slot over to PF. SF will be more difficult but will probably be a platoon of guys Moore, Suber, maybe Greg Lee the redshirt freshman and Person Jr the freshman if he doesn't redshirt. We are going to be a really young team for the first time in a while which should be interesting. But the guy I am most excited about is Jarkel Joiner. The 2nd leading scorer in high school in the nation and his highlights are insane, he just scores from anywhere. He had offers from NMSU and MTSU but Barnes convinced him to come to CSUB. He is going to be special. I do think Barnes will probably be gone next year though you're right. I hope he at least get's a P5 offer, he deserves it. I do hope we keep him as long as we possibly can though.
Maybe the athletic directors at the universities have looked at Coach Barnes overall record back to 2002-03. The first four years at Ole Miss 1998-99 to 2001-02 he had great success going to the NCAA three times and the NIT on one occasion, his last four years at Ole Miss he was 55-63. In 2007-11 he was at Georgia State, in four years there he was 44-79. His first four years at CSUB 2011-15 he was 57-58, only in the last two years his he had recent success. In his 18 years of coaching at the university level he has only had seven years with his teams over .500.

That would obviously be an extreme disservice. He won National Coach of the Year. Ole Miss made it to the Sweet 16 in 2001 and have only won two tournament games since. Georgia State was a rebuild that didn't work they were coming off of some APR problems. In Bakersfield this team was absolutely nothing. A D-1 independent that didn't seem like they were even going to get into a conference after the Big West shot us down twice. Now he has won back to back WAC coach of the year awards, the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year, CSUB's first NCAA tournament berth, CSUB's first WAC regular season title and became the first 8 seed in the history of the NIT to reach the semifinals something that might not happen again for a long time. He built us up from nothing and deserves nothing but praise for his work. If we do well next year which is expected now he will be on people's radars for sure.

Just saying...
I would like to think AD's are much smarter than just looking at records. Plus recency bias.

I agree on Joiner especially. He's going to be a stud
Pretty surprising he didn't get any P5 offers. He is so damn athletic for his size. Really reminds me of Russell Westbrook, the uber athleticism and rebounding for a smaller guy. Not saying he will be as good obviously haha. That's just who I am instantly reminded of when I see his highlights.
