Former 3-star big Dwight Coleby announced his transfer from Kansas a few days ago. I was kind of hoping we brokered a trade for Jack and Coleby was a player to be named later. Probably doesn't work that way though unfortunately.
It's interesting how teams dissolve. It happens more often than you might think. Even more interesting is how these same teams are rebuilt. Partially or entirely on the sly.

Discontent can spread pretty rapidly. A lot of these guys are close and point out what they see as flaws with a situation. Then everyone notices those same items and then several guys become fixated on them.
At the same time, other people see opportunities to play where there is a void and are happy to change situations.

Haha that's about what I would have expected from Tony. I do like the idea of a schools committing to a scholarship for two years for grad transfers that the article touched on.
Jones mentioned summer school.
I know why folks on here donate their hard-earned money for summer school for W&M hoops players, but if one of the unintended consequences is that a player can graduate and leave, partially due to that dime paid for summer school, not a good deal.
Fool me once, ...
Jack's legacy may be the drying up of summer school funds at W&M. Wonder if that ever entered the equation ... you know the one about the needs of the one vs the needs of the many.
If the grad transfer counted against graduation rates if they didn't get degrees, that would solve some issues in a hurry. I think it would also change the landscape if players turning pro counted against graduation rates. I'm a UK fan, but you couldn't have 5 freshmen starters every year if you started running out of scholarships.
Another easy fix is this:
Charge the college a scholarship over two years and if the player doesn't complete two semesters they lose it for the entire two year period.
My reaction to this whole event has mirrored Mike Kryzewski's reaction the first time one of his players went pro without graduating.
IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE! THIS IS NOT WHAT W&M BASKETBALL IS ABOUT! SURELY THIS IS A SIGN THE APOCALYPSE IS UPON US!
I understand what Whitman did (though failing to tell the coaching staff about it until it was too late for them to react - not so much).
I saw it happen at other schools and didn't feel their pain.
It has taken me this long to even be able to comment on it. And I still can't look at the 2017 and 2018 recruiting threads.
Several thoughts:
Summer school--I'm sure we will continue to have a summer session for practice purposes, but Coach probably won't be too concerned if players don't get a full load. Tony has never wanted guys here for two summer sessions. He wants them to have time at home and time to chill. This graduate transfer rule will solidify that decision. Question--Does the coaching staff and administration now decide how many hours of classes a player can have each semester/summer based on gradation outlook?
"Beginning next season, the NCAA will require grad transfers to complete six hours of credit toward a degree in each term. But if a player leaves before earning a degree, it won’t hurt the school’s APR."
What has it been up until now? Three hours? One hour? What a blatant disregard for the student in "student athlete." Six hours each term? Not sure, but I think undergrads have to take 12 hours to be eligible. Why allow fewer hours in a situation that is ripe for abuse? And no problem if you leave before earning a degree. That's not why you were there in the first place.

Grad school can vary greatly because in some programs if you are writing a dissertation or doing some other non-classroom component it's not always for credit. I had friends in grad school doing one class of three credits while they were spending most of their time doing research or writing. Six credits makes sense since most grad transfers will be in their first couple of years where there tends to be more coursework.
So, after seeing recent tweet pics of Whitman posing with a professional trainer, then signing Kansas tee shirts at Self's basketball camp, I couldn"t help but visualize the choice:
a) toil for another year in a William and Mary grad/undergrad program and try to balance that with playing my last eligible year,
or,
b) spend my last eligible year exclusively devoted to working out and advancing my basketball skills, while living in a resort.
I still strongly believe there is something to be said for loyalty and gratefulness, both of which were inexcusably lacking here in how the departure occured, but if you wanted to focus strictly on basketball development, William & Mary will never be the place, and that should never change.
Regarding summer school, I don't see that as an issue, since rare will be the case in which that alone affords most players the ability to graduate in three years. The NCAA changes a few years back which allows up to eight, weekly mandatory hours of staff involved training while enrolled in summer school (for which two hours/week can be basketball instruction) is a valuable asset for a program. Redshirting I doubt we will ever see again, though.

Was academic kid out of HS. Cannot find anything on where he is now, but would be an interesting trade with, I assume, 2 years immediate eligibility.

Maxwell just committed to NAIA program Indiana Wesleyan.
Interesting watching videos from Kansas practice and current squad game versus alums at their kid's camp, as well as, interviews with Self and former/current players afterwards. Whitman participated, but Self only talked about two other bigs. No mention of Jack. Certainly remains to be seen, but think I would have valued major playing time my last year over the Kansas experience.

Coleby headed to Western Kentucky.
We're still in "nothing happening" position with NCAA over our Florida big man graduate transfer.
Everyone in basketball office steamed at NCAA...if we don't hear very soon the whole thing will fall through.

It is too bad that he completely blew up the bridge when he left W&M. We could really use each other at this point. I have no idea how the NCAA would view his coming back to W&M. A completely stupid and moot mind wandering on my part.
