Wow, that's too bad but with savings upwards towards $2 mil you can't blame them. Unfortunate timing on the announcement, doesn't give the current athletes an opportunity to look to transfer elsewhere. I do admire their Athletic Department for honoring the student's scholarships though.

With NIU's recent Program Prioritization initiative, it sounds like NIU could potentially cut a male non-revenue sport this year as well. Is it likely? Curious to hear what some board members feel the outcome of that will be.

I think of it a bit differently, that it's amazing that all those programs subsisted on only $2M. Seems a drop in the hat.

Technically NIU has 17 as the NCAA counts Indoor and Outdoor Women's track as 2 different sports taking place during different seasons.

I wondered if baseball was on the chopping block when the previous master plan had a new facility built where the baseball stadium is currently located. I hope not but don't see many sports that would actually be a decent sized savings.

The Master Plan has an all-new baseball facility west of Stevenson on the north side of Lucinda.

I got that and hoped they would have stuck to that but questioned it because it wasn't a priority in the project. Now with budget cuts and more paycheck games I doubt the master plan will get off the ground real soon but if it does, how much of a priority will baseball be?

That plan in it's entirety seems slightly more likely than the plan was for the 2nd NBA team to play in Chicago area at the site of the old mill in Harvey off 147th.

Seriously, does anyone see this being done within 5 yrs, if ever?

True and the most recent NIU athletic strategic plan called for bringing in some type of minor league team to share the stadium by Summer of 2017 (obviously not happening at this time)

Baseball is likely the most expensive men's non-revenue sport for NIU. Cutting them and not having the facility to maintain will save maybe $300k per year. For an athletic budget of something close to 27mil to cut just over 1% of the budget and directly impacting student athletes, while instead you could easily cut that amount in office personnel...say long timers like Brad, Sue & Eric, that would be a disastrous PR move.

College baseball teams partnering with short season minor league franchises is going to be the salvation of college baseball outside the sunbelt or baseball hotbeds like Wichita & St Louis.

Schaumburg, Kane County, Joliet, Cook County(Crestwood) & Gary draw decently (at least 2K per game, Schaumburg over 3K and Kane County nearly 6K) A DeKalb franchise in the Frontier league would be able to develop several rivalries and travel costs would be very reasonable considering the short distances to opponents stadiums.

Of course 3 of the 4 sports being cut are men's. One more big money football game would almost be enough to keep all 4 sports.

For the local athletes on those teams, Erie CC which has the size and facilities of COD has teams in the Buffalo sports being cut, if nothing else some of those being affected could find a position there next year if no ncaa programs need more talent

More likely would be another attempt at a collegiate summer league team. Can run much cheaper ("hey neighbor, your debts are paid because you don't pay for labor"), the coaches could probably be moonlighting NIU and Kish coaches with a heavy-ish NIU/Kish roster (there are pobably rules about coach/roster overlap). The gate doesn't needs to be as high to cover costs so you have a shot at surviving a while in the shadow of nearby affiliated ball.

I like the ideation of a collegiate summer team / minor league / affiliated teams etc, but I just don't see the momentum. Fan apathy in northern Illinois seems like a disease.

It really has reached monumental levels and the disconnect between community and NIU has never been more apparent

Doesn't help that all these weekday games kill the local economy. I get it's the MAC's fault but it comes across as niu turning its back on local partners.
