Year one: Winning record, improve as year goes along, create excitement for future with recruiting (aka land a legit 4/5 star guy to build around).

Year two: Increase in attendance, top 3 conference finish, serious NIT run/NCAA appearance, top 20 recruiting class.

Year three: Top 3 conference finish, NCAA tourney win, Top 25 finish, top 20 recruiting class.

Year four: Top 3 conference finish, NCAA Sweet 16, Top 25 finish, top 20 recruiting class.

These are completely reasonable expectations for what the Memphis job is. Tubby's 4-5 year rebuilding strategy isn't going to work here because this isn't Texas Tech. He better start making headway and quickly or it will get very ugly for him.

But with a total contract of over $15M, he finally hit his jackpot. Question is, will he care?

I have to say that I agree with you.
I've got a better question: do the powers that be care?

Yes. Their ass in is deep dodo because they grossly underestimated the revenue loss resulting from hiring Tubby. Someone is going to have to fall on a knife and I suspect it will be our AD. No one here seems to grasp the massive revenue loss since Bowen was hired.

We can debate whose fault it was but the buck stops with Bowen.
So, improving every year is a good idea.

Now we know.

Regression is allowed as long as it is coupled with a short and long term promise of better days ahead.

Even Pastner, who went 13-3 his 1st year in conference, went 10-6 the next year with the great recruits and suffered regression.

BUT, the promise of better days was that the bulk of the frosh were returning and would improve, and Adonis was coming in to add depth.

So, you can be disappointed that a season doesn't meet expectations as long as you have reason to believe there is hope.

When you face the likelihood you will lose an all conference player and replace him with JUCO sixth men and frosh who aren't projected to be ready to really contribute for two years, that doesn't foster hope.

Keep in mind - a lot of people on here were b!tching about Pastner's 2nd year regression. We are impatient.

I understand. I was. Much of it for me was his handling of Joe. There a multiple threads about that.

But, the bigger idea was that despite the concerns, there was still the realization that the next year still promised hope. I believe after the Arizona loss, folks saw the potential of what the team could become and knowing that a top 5 player was coming in made the disappointment of the past season fade quickly.

There was also the expectation that Josh would grow significantly as a floor coach or hire someone that would help him grow in that area. He also did not recruit players that fit his unique personality as a coach which stunted both his and their development in my opinion.

I truly believe both Josh and Tubby have very different personalities/coaching styles, neither of which fit in well with the Memphis basketball culture. Our administration is too concerned about NCAA violations and not concerned enough about revenue and a rapidly diminishing brand.
It's like we get the same thread.

I'm convinced message board fodder is a small needle that moves larger needles that ultimately move the largest needles. It's important fans voice their opinions on the state of our athletic programs. If you have a differing opinion you're more than welcome to share it again.

I've lived groundhog day for nearly a year now waiting on recruiting news every day since the hire.

It's depressing.

Agreed. I jumped off the bandwagon after the 4 kings year. That's when I gave up.

Then lay out some concrete reasons why those who are concerned should have hope. Real, tangible, reasons.

Not just the same b.s of "just give him a chance" or "he knows what he's doing."

Turn off the internet for a few days. Go play some golf. Go fishing. Take your wife on a weekend trip.

Come back in a few days and you might be pleasantly surprised. And, even if you aren't...you've gotten some fresh air and maybe even gotten some 'action'.
