I'd be somewhat surprised if they did. Rice derives no benefit from blocking VCU (not in the same conference, not routinely competing for recruits in the same areas, not on each other's schedules that I'm aware of), and arbitrarily blocking schools has a tendency to create blowback for the instigating party. See also: Buffalo blocking Shannon Evans from transferring to ODU.

When Shaka left VCU, the school didn't stand in the way of its three incoming freshmen transferring, and one followed him to Texas—a move both parties probably quickly regretted.

The Buffalo situation was different, since ODU and VCU didnt play them and Hurley didn't leave for either program. It made no sense. I dont think anyone would have faulted them from blocking him just from transferring to Arizona State (or the rest of the MAC).

And I don't think its arbitrary at all. You're protecting your program from being purged by the coach who just left the program. If they want to leave, they can go play anywhere outside of CUSA and VCU. That leaves a ton of options.

Edit; I'll add that they need to stop forcing kids to sit a year for transferring when the coach leaves. They committed to the school under specific conditions. Once those conditions changed, they shouldn't be forced to play for a coach they didn't commit to or sit for wanting out.

It makes sense to block a conference opponent because you don't want to give the kid 1-3 chances to make you look bad every season. And if Rice and VCU were in a long-term OOC contract, I could see why you wouldn't want him going over there. But telling someone that he can't transfer to play with the coach that recruited him in the first place without a better reason than the presumed default of "We're mad that the coach left so screw him" is a bad look that doesn't help them at all, especially if they hire someone else's head coach or lead assistant and gladly accept transfers from his school.
I can see both sides of this one, but I think I agree more with Drunkard. It is pretty messed up for a coach to bail and then raid an entire recruiting class on top of it.

I'd agree with that, but a coach raiding his old school's entire incoming class is pretty unusual. When Shaka left VCU, only one of his three recruits followed suit. The others went to Carolina and Minnesota; they weren't following Shaka but they no longer wanted to play for a school that didn't have the guy that recruited them.

It's hard to know what Rhoades will do until he gets a handle on how many of Wade's incoming class he'll be able to keep. I think Evans is the only threat to follow Rhoades because of the regional ties.

Wow.

Wow.

It's not even up for debate, no idea why that statement gets a "wow" reaction.

Also, rhoades to vcu was a total no brainer, the guy was a huge part of their final 4 run, was a huge part of Randolph Macon being extremely successful and turned around one of the absolute worst teams in America in three short years.

He took a 4 star recruit out of odu's backyard and got him to go to Texas, imagine what he will do back at vcu with his connections and ability.

This is very bad news for odu ever getting on par with vcu but it's an amazing signing for vcu. Not a single vcu fan is bummed about this hire and that pretty much says it all to me. The total opposite reaction most odu fans had when jones was hired.
Funny thing is he could have very easily been ODUs coach. The big question then, is would he have left the Monarchs for the Rams. Imagine the outrage had that happened.
So what is Rhoads' record head-to-head vs. JJ at ODU? I believe it's 1-5. Very impressive.

He was at RICE.
This thread is pathetic. Wish the mods would delete it.

Jones coaches circles around him. He better recruit really well.

No he doesn't and it's pathetic your basketball "analysis" lead you to this conclusion.

5 years from now, if he's still at vcu and not at a bcs school, rhoades will have a winning record against odu while at vcu.

That's pretty much a guarantee.

Unbelievable that the idiots hiring coaches at ODU didn't think Rhoades was qualified, but VCU seemingly pushed Wade out the door so they could go get him. That's why they are who they are and we are who we are.

If you are scoring at home, we passed on the guy who just got the NC State job and the guy that just got the VCU job to hire a guy with 10 wins at American. Who's trying to hire our coach away? Nobody. Why might that be?

Pretty much the truth word for word.

We have a coach no one wants including quite a large portion of our own fanbase while vcu just keeps on hiring winner after winner.

This falls at the feet of one man and one man alone.

I'll take ODU in November based on what is happening.

I get your points, but would you really prefer the revolving door that is the VCU job? At some point this will hurt them and I think it is even money that this will be that time.
Yes I would prefer the revolving door, because there are basically only two options at our level. You aren't that good or somebody wants your coach.

At least they'll have 8 straight NCAAs and a Final 4 run before it hurts them. We had 2 straight with one win then a 5-25 and now have eternal mediocrity. Again, this thread is pathetic. So yeah, I'd rather have the revolving door.

Ever $5 says the streak stops/pauses at 7
Ill take different coaches and 7 straight NCAA appearances over 1 coach and no NCAA appearances.
