Duke was pretty much equal to us. Arizona was among the worst 25 teams in the country.

ODU ranked 45th, fourth in CUSA and ahead of the likes of Georgia Tech, BYU and Memphis. Of course, I don't know that you can say with a straight face that ODU's collective fb/bb success is greater than Arizona and Duke, which were both top-10 basketball teams, no matter how much you weigh football results over basketball. But still.
Arizona and Duke would also kill us in football, let's be real. They are about at the level as NC State for comparison. We ran up the wins on a really weak schedule. Not complaining, but if we were in the ACC or PAC 12 we'd likely be winless in conference.

Dumb comparison. If we were in the ACC or PAC12, we'd have different recruits. We would also have a lot more money to throw around. So, you cant say if we were in either league we would go winless because too many things would change for our program under that scenario.

We aren't comparing if we had different recruits. We are comparing the players we have.

Remember when Bobby Wilder brought all of the early football recruits to basketball games to show them the wild atmosphere and great crowd support. He sold them on the dream that football would have the same. It is an easy argument that without ODUs basketball success, football would never have happened. We can be in good in both and as fans and donors we should expect it.

True. I understand the argument, but we are pretty good at both basketball and football. We just need to take a small step up to get in the tourney and need a bowl game every year.

People act like we suck at basketball for some reason.

When you score 2 points with 1-19 shooting in the first 10 minutes of the biggest game of the season against one of the worst defenses in the country, you need more than a small step to get into the tournament.

Yeah, the young guys showed some promise here and there, but we've got a long ways to go.

Oh, that solves it. Those 10 minutes meant everything.

They meant almost as much as the other 30+ games we played where we were a 125+ rpi team.

"Really close to being an NCAA tourney team".

What a joke. Also top 125 doesn't qualify as good. It's barely above mediocre.

And we still lost.

When you can't beat Marshall, you aren't close to an NCAA Tournament bid.

Of course, rehashing all of the embarrassing losses from this past season will likely turn this thread into...well...all of the other threads.

But we need much more than a small step to get to the NCAA Tournament, much less compete when if we get there.

This 35 page thread about vcu's supposed downfall is already "one of those threads." Feels like jmu up in here

That's what happens when you hire a mediocre coach and a bad AD and have no tevent success of our own to discuss.

Well unless you are Giles and consider a 19 win, 125+ rpi team with one top 100 win and another quarterfinal loss in the conference tourney a "really good team that just needs a small step to go to the NCAA tourney".

Unreal.

That's exactly why it's a dumb comparison. If we were in those leagues, our entire roster would be different.
Posters keep bringing up athletic department budget comparisons.

Even after parsing out operating budgets and capital budgets, comparisons are not necessarily going to be relevant when comparing ODU.
Most, if not all other states are far more forgiving as to allowing for categories and line items to be "hidden" or allocated to areas other than athletics.

With the new stadium and practice facility, ODU will have enough in the way of facilities to be competitive.

Operationally, travel is more or less fixed, Uniforms and equipment costs are more or less common across all of the programs in CUSA.

We may or may not spend more on non revenue sports but, the most important operational figures to compare right now (COAs are coming) are coaches salaries; HCs and assistants, per sport, not overall AD operating budget.

vCU lost Easley
It's weird, I spend a lot of time on their board but I always find out about their latest loss on this thread. Weird.
Because we have no skinn in the game.
Who is Easley?

While we are talking about VCU still, Marcus Evans has scheduled a visit with Kansas
This thread should be deleted. We make fun of JMU for things like this.

If you can't laugh at your foes, who can you laugh at? You guys are too serious.

It would be one thing if we were laughing at Liberty or FIU, but we shouldn't really be casting stones toward Richmond considering the overall direction of the two programs starting with Matt Howard.
Could Mo Alie-Cox do what Richard Roos couldn't?
