Though it is still operating at a deficit, the football program brought in approximately $6.521 million in revenues during the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2016, and included the 2015 football season. A combination of enticing home games against Ole Miss and Navy, increased season-ticket sales and a favorable bowl destination led to an increase of 167 percent from the previous year, when football revenues totaled $2.433 million.
Revenues in the men’s basketball program, meanwhile, have been trending in the opposite direction for several years. The university’s flagship sports team brought in just $6.089 million in 2016, down from $6.179 million the year before and $7.614 million in 2014, according to data previously submitted to the NCAA.

Sabin said the two main factors are ticket sales and donations from supporters, which also increased in the 2016 fiscal year from $6.682 million to $7.60 million.
Virtually all of this is per seat donations for basketball and was as high as $15M a year in 2010-2012.

Altogether, the Memphis athletic department reported a deficit of $87,910 in the 2016 fiscal year, with $50.027 million in revenues and $50.115 million in expenditures. The athletic department received $8.844 million in direct institutional support from the university.

I like a lot of what this new guy does, but he obviously didn't do his homework with this one.
I've been working with another media person to get the real story out right after end of season and Tom (to his credit; he is a hustler) jumped in but just doesn't know the facts. I am assuming that "direct institutional support" is primarily student activity fees-been a long time since i analyzed the University's financial statements.

You realize that the university has been subsidizing the athletic dept. forever, right?
You guys realize that there are about ten ADs out there operating in an honest black bottom line without academic accounting, right?
We lose money but we aren't losing money hand-over-fist as much as a hundred other programs out there.

Well, that remains to be seen; when we were in the middle of analyzing prior year Financials, there was some creative stuff going on-not illegal or even close; but items shuffled around to so many departments, you really had to follow and I didn't have time at that point. But you are right, very few turn a true profit. I have never understood Title X or Olympic sports and I had a sports playing daughter. Such a drain on University resources.

I'm very fimilar with fund accounting. I think it is about 20 AD's, but yes.
