Quote:For the first time in recent history, the Tigers’ football program brought in more revenue than the men’s basketball program during the 2016 fiscal year, according to documents filed with the NCAA and obtained by The Commercial Appeal in an open-records request.

Someone should tweet that to Bowlsby.
From the CA article: "A combination of enticing home games against Ole Miss and Navy, increased season-ticket sales and a favorable bowl destination led to an increase of 167 percent from the previous year, when football revenues totaled $2.433 million."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We got ucla and navy (who might not be as good) this year to help attendance, but after that, i hope we can still schedule at least two home games vs quality opponents every year.. I have doubts that will happen.

As far as bball goes, whoever makes the decisions made some terrible decisions in the past 2 years, so it's no surprise bbball revenues are down so much. That's what happens when you ignore the fans/customers. Pastner should have been fired two years earlier instead of letting him run the program in the ground. On top of that, he was going to coach another year (after some shady moves by the u of m) until he finally moved on to ga tech.

Was a buyout of josh TWO years earlier more or less than the revenues lost in the last two years in bball? That would be interesting to know.

So if football is running a deficit still, is bball running a deficit now?

Actually I usually start a thread like this because it is important or very relevant to Tiger athletics (which to me is BB and then FB). This one is critical but most have not caught on and will not until it's too late. I'm not about me.

Once you have grandkids and gone through what I have, it grounds you to a certain extent.

There are many game threads that you post outside of for attention. And you need some deep self-reflection if you think of yourself as "grounded."

Grounded people don't self proclaim that they "know more than 99% of people here" (sic).

Well that's your opinion. I've noticed a very consistent trend in your posts-you never contribute information or impart knowledge about BB or FB; it's always about critiquing or, worst yet, trying to discredit other posters. So reflect on that.

I rarely critique. Self proclaimed 1%er-basketball-genius-crybaby-thread-creator grounded people are a special case.

Not that it matters to me, as I think this is a subject that can't be talked about enough, but look at the OP time stamps, champ.

Not a big deal to me either but I always check new posts before starting a new thread. Yours was not on here.

The only logical explanation ("champ") is that I changed the thread title later and it got a new time stamp. Had been told to give CA credit when I post part of their stories so I changed it to include CA; Mods might could answer that but really don't give a shite as I have been working on this revenue thing for a long time and was very surprised that, of all the CA writers, Tom came out with the article. Had discussed at length with Geoff.

So if you want to be first in line, you can.

And to some of us it's football first (nothing like tailgating and Tiger football), then basketball. I just wish we could be good in both. Keep football on the up swing and hopefully get basketball back on track.

I'm coming around because we enjoy the family tailgating so much with the little ones. Strong base for future Tiger FB fans.

Too funny but the 1%er didn't realize you posted an entire hour before he did...

Heck his first reply is an hour later than yours by the same person...
Me too. I love the tailgates. My Tiger little ones are so excited!
I would like to commend TigerAF for using the football icon. awesome!
Football should generate more revenue. Football is where the money is at. It's a too bad that basketball revenue is down, but you want football to be your top revenue sport.

Correct but you can't change the fact Memphis has been and still is a basketball school and the revenue numbers are misleading; a middle schooler could figure that out. I guess math is not Tom's strong suit.

Our history and tradition made us the 19th best basketball program in past 50 years. I suspect it will stay that way if we can't keep a great coach like Fuente or Norvell has the potential to be (and we get thus BB situation corrected soon). As long as we are a stepping stone job, it's hard to build traditions.
