I guess of that list, I wouldn't mind Saddi Washington, assuming he brings Beilein's offense with him. Our last UofM assistant didn't exactly do too well here.
Personally, I'd love to get someone with no Michigan ties. Someone that has recruiting advantages in other areas. We get killed locally still, because of the perception of our program. Murphy and Benny White were supposed to re-establish a pipeline here, yet they brought in only two true freshmen from the Detroit area, and neither of them were PSL kids.
Our football coach had zero experience in Michigan, yet took us to our first bowl game in 30 years. Let's try something different with basketball.
Any of these schools play 2-3 zone as their primary defense?

I found a few of them on a list of assistants that have a future as a head coach. I thought Washington is intriguing because he played in the MAC, is from MI, and coached for years under Kampe and Belein.
Another name you can think about is Lorenzo Neely, but he may for more as an asst.
I'm sure if you search the internet enough you'd find many more with good resume's. Of course, that does not necessarily mean they have HC potential.
Neely? D-II assistant coach. Really?
Steve, that's what I said.
Neely is a heck of a recruiter and I believe should be a leading assistant candidate providing his emotions are under control.
Bingo.
Although it isn't usually that way.
A head coach would pick whom he knows and feels comfortable. Neely has been buried at Wayne State for a long time. Many young D-I coaches aren't familiar with him.
An assistant from a D-II school that we beat by 50 points on average every time we face them? How about no... Only time I have seen a basketball team completely quit during a game was when I saw WSU play. In his 12 years there did they have any success?

Nobody said he was a head coach candidate. I only put his name in because it's a name we all know and would be an intriguing possibility as an assistant coach. End of story.
Lorenzo Neely would be my pick as new coach. He would revive interest in the program and is a winner. The Murphy era has further eroded the fanbase with his less than entertaining style of play and boring personality. Grant Long would be an excellent assistant coach.

'Nickle, what I'm getting at is discussing possible ass't coaching candidates WITHOUT knowing who the head coach is, to me, an exercise in futility.
Who knows maybe the next HC could be an ass't from Duke. If so, does he even know who Neely is????
Head coaches hire assistant coaches that they know, like, etc. etc. Coaching is like a fraternity or priesthood. They all know each other from coaching against each other, from coaching conventions, etc. (e.g., CC and the coaches from WMU and CMU were at a recent MI h.s. FB banquet. These guys know each other.)
They don't go through their new school's media guides looking for popular fmr. basketball players.
Lyke needs to determine if Murphy stays or goes.
Then hires a new HC if Murphy isn't retained.
Then he hires his coaching staff.
So in this hierarchy of decision making selecting asst coaches is dependent on the decisions (plural) made higher in the decision making tree.
Kind of like putting the cart before the horse.
And remember, IF Murphy isn't retained, Lyke might get 50 - 100 applications for the job.
Anyone who can predict her choice, assuming it comes to that, is the Nostradamus of this board.
And anyone who thinks they can predict whom Lyke might choose, put your hand on a Bible, and swear to tell the truth and say: I predicted Murphy or I predicted Castro.
Anyone on this board can honestly say they had heard the name "Fred Castro" before he was hired?
I remember all of the scuttlebutt to replace Ramsey and Murphy was added to the mix late in the game. He was not speculated on here as a candidate the board prognosticators discussed.
As I remember it, there were a lot of other names bandy about and his was not one.
If I remember correctly, Murphy might have been the LAST one interviewed. Some of the earlier candidates withdrew, etc.
BTW, for all the names tossed out for HC or asst coaches with ties to EMU, everyone is missing the most obvious:
Charles Thomas.
Lest I be wrong: He is the only fmr. EMU basketball player who is a D-I assistant coach. (he is an ass't with the very, very successful Akron Zips).
People tossing out Grant Long, Earl Boykins, etc. They aren't even in D-I ball. I have no idea what Grant Long is doing these days.
Sometimes I think posters are trying to come up with an EMU athletics drinking party invite list...
Let's hoist one to the good ole days, Grant. Let's hoist one, Carl and Charles. Let's hoist one, Earl (Brian and Derrick and James and Theron and...).
Grant Long does studio work for the Pistons.
Hitching our wagon to local guys hasn't exactly worked out for us. I'd rather find someone elsewhere (preferably still the Midwest) who has ties to other cities. There is plenty of talent outside of the state of Michigan. I think people on these boards find it necessary to get local kids, while I personally don't care. When I watch Tim Bond play, it says Eastern Michigan on his chest, not Baltimore Maryland.
I want a coach who will find talent wherever it may be, and build a winning program. If that's with kids from Detroit, great. If that's with kids from China, great too. Winning solves most problems, and our recruiting issues in Detroit would subside when a consistent MAC contender is assembled.
Agreed, Sam. I want the best coach possible, not conditional on their location. If he's from Detroit, awesome. If he's from Dallas, I wouldn't hesitate. Hitting a homerun with a former EMU player would be incredible, but in reality, most schools never strike lightning with former players.

I agree with Frank and Sam. And we need to understand the PROCESS.
I don't know if Lyke would simply accept applications or go through a search company.
If she goes through a search company they may have SCORES of candidates who are looking for: a D-I, mid-major HC job in the Midwest. Don't they screen: What job: D-I HC. What level (high major, mid major, low major), what areas of the country, salary requirements (e.g., 150 - 249K, 250 - 349, 350 - 499, etc.)
The list might include some of the applicants for the Detroit-Mercy job or other jobs in the Midwest.
It could include D-I assistants across the country OR it could include HCs from the so-called D-I low major ranks.
Like remember Lyke has a lot of experience at Ohio State. She knows (and has contacts) in B1G land. Any number of B1G assistant coaches could be candidates.
Remember, wasn't CC chosen based on a recommendation from Tressel whom Lyke knows (I believe I have this right).
E.g., if Lyke was looking for a HC a year ago, Jeff Boals of Ohio U and OSU (coaching) would have be a good candidate. (he is now HC at Stony Brook).
This is a very good resume for a mid-major MAC coach (pardon the expression, but he 'checks all of the boxes').
1). B1G assist coach.
2). Fmr. MAC assist. coach.
3). Fmr. MAC player.
4). Born and raised in the Midwest.

If we want a 2 3 zone we could go back to Syracuse I also think Texas plays a 2 3 easier to bring a coach in that fits the talent of players already here we do need an offensive scheme with some discipline in rather than everyone trying to create on their own we also need a coach that will develop our players our players growth on the court has been stagnant this year
