talk down about the student section again... the students were loud all game and the upper bowl sat until 5 seconds left... keep living in 2003.. stop taking tickets if you're gonna sit
What I'd give for W&M to have a packed student section like you enjoy at the Trask. Our students' fandom is as streaky as CG's underpants.

One Tribe. One Family.

Damn, that must be bad! 02-13-banana
Students deserve props tonight. If the refs hadnt blown their flipping whistle every 20 seconds the game would have had a better flow and the crowd could have continued the noise instead of the constant stopage and trying to restart.

Reily mentioned in his post game these refs were an ACC crew being evaluated tonight for possible inclusion on NCAA tournament list

I hope they don't make it and ruin another game. I have never seen so many travel and carry calls in one game before. You could barely breath on a guy without a whistle.

Was listening too, what a joke that those officials are being considered
Refs sucked. Period. They kept CofC in the game. Yeah, we didn't hit FT's but the refs completely brought the pace of the game to a crawl.

Over on the CoC board they have nicknamed that one ref TV Teddy. I don't know any of their names but I would be willing to wager they were referring to the black ref with hair. He was the worst
Refraining from words that would get me banned. So much pain. Go hawks. Same situation as last year at this point. I appreciate you guys. But damn the upper level...

The upper level pays the bills. Many of them are older and likely didn't attend UNCW, so they aren't going to get up and yell. They are there for the entertainment. Enjoy the fact we have, by far, the best home crowd in the CAA, and it's not even close right now. We lead the conference in attendance even when we suck.

You are correct. He tried to be the center of attention every game he refs. Never let's any game get into a flow. That being said neither team deserved to lose. Both teams played their hearts out. Hope we meet again this year.
That's correct, teddy valentine. Loves to insert himself into games, make exaggerated calls, very attention grabbing style. Nationwide reputation, lives in west Ashley and would ref our home socon games on acc off nights.

Has seemed to go out of his way to make bad calls against us just to prove he's impartial. He's worked something like 27 consecutive tournaments, including several final fours and national championships.

Just googled the guy. Holy crap people hate this guy
Valentine is indeed hated by most fans who've "experienced" his work.

He cost us an NCAA bid (with one phantom call at game's end) one year in the conference tournament final during our sojourn in the Atlantic Sun. True story.

Here's a quote from this board ("ACC conference talk") from over 12 years ago:

"Teddy Valentine, Carl Hess and Duke Edsell have to be some of the worst refs in the NCAA. So lucky for the ACC to have all three of them!"
Great energy by the students tonight. And great restraint at the end not to make the CoC exit any worse. See you Sat.

I think everyone here will tell you I go light on banning people. I've only banned one person in my few years as the mod now. Wow... has it been that long already?!
Student section was fire. No doubt about it.
Student section was great but I had no problem with the refs. I really don't know what some people expect from the refs but you know at least 50% of the fans will not like the call whatever it is. I also think the traveling and dribble carry calls were good calls and should be called more than what you see these days. You should expect to see the NCAA games called along the same lines as this game was called. Crying about the refs is a long standing tradition for college basketball fans but refs get it right far more than most fans think. It is a thankless job with little respect being given even to the very best refs out there.

That's not unique to UNCW. Cameron is considered to have one of the greatest home court advantages in CBB, and it's the same there. Never been to Allen Fieldhouse, but it's not about living in 2003.

BTW, I stood last night in section 220, and I was sitting in front of and beside students who asked me to sit down. These students didn't stand the last 5 seconds either.

Valentine would help the plight of refs if he didn't so desperately want to be seen. There's no reason for him to engage two different fans last night; there's no reason to look at Keatts from across the floor, demonstratively shrug your shoulders or tell him to calm down when he questions a call.

I was in person, so perhaps the camera caught Cacok saying/doing something, but I still don't understand why he was T'd up.

As for the carry, the first one that I recall (called by Valentine) was a make up call. Seconds before we walked and it wasn't called. I firmly believe that carrying is like holding in football. If you wanted, you could call it on most possessions. I would be fine if they called it consistently, but that's a different discussion. In today's game, it only needs to be called when the offensive player uses the carry to create an advantage going to the rim. Both of the carries I recall last night were around the perimeter, with no advantage gained.

That said, only three calls stood out as bad.

I actually agree they were fairly consistent. That 3 point foul near the end was a bad call and one of the worst of the game. My complaint is that they just called EVERY LITTLE THING. That slowed the pace to a crawl which favored CoC and killed the crowd which also favored CoC. Thus the way the game was called favored CoC in every way

As for Cacok I agree I thought he did everything right. He walked away from the situation with the other joker jackjawin but still got a T. He either said something inappropriate or TV Teddy wanted more attention, he must not have been held enough as a child.

The CoC bench mocking the crowd was bush. Definitely added some heat to a rivalry that was built on respect
