I guess the coaching dead can come back to life. :)

Texas A&M: Sources tell FootballScoop Ron Cooper is a strong candidate to fill the defensive backs position at Texas A&M. Cooper served as defensive coordinator (and then interim head coach) at FIU this past season. He previously coached defensive backs at South Florida, for the Tampa Bay Bucs, LSU (with John Chavis), South Carolina and more. Don’t believe a deal is in place yet; but hear it could be within the next day or so.
So . . . why WAS Louisville so impressed with Cooper anyway?

Ron Cooper was a very good self-promoter. I'm not trying to insult him by saying that, but he was a big believer in himself and could convince others to go along.

If I remember correctly both his years at EMU the team was 5-6, but in each year they had a road game against a top team. Even two 5-6 seasons at EMU is not a bad job.

Indeed.

I've always joked about him when it came to recruiting (and other things), that he could sell ice cubes to an Eskimo.

Here is Wikipedia on Cooper's time at EMU:

"Ron Cooper era (1993-1994)[edit]
Next, EMU turned to a young, up-and-coming assistant coach to right the ship. Ron Cooper was hired as EMU's head coach.[35] Cooper had been an assistant at Notre Dame and Minnesota under legendary head coach Lou Holtz.[35][36] Cooper had also been an assistant at East Carolina and UNLV.[35][37]

Cooper's Eagles compiled a 4-7 mark in 1993 and a 5-6 record in 1995.[38] Cooper left EMU after two seasons to accept the position of head football coach at Louisville.[39]"

I really (and yes, selfishly) thought that Cooper should have stayed another year at EMU to coach all the talent he brought in. His successor, Rick Rasnick, started very fast in 1995 but the team 'hit the wall' late in the year and finished 6 - 5 after a very good start.

Long time fans may remember that Cooper ran a bad option offense. When Rasnick took over he ran a pass happy offense with Charlie Batch and EMU could really put points on the scoreboard...

Those were fun time. EMU ran up some of the scores in 1995. Think they took it to the Zips in the opener at Akron and then UNLV at home before a very, very large crowd.
