Over the years, many schools have dropped football. The majority were in New England or California. Which FBS or FCS are likely to drop football in the future?
Possible FBS drops:
New Mexico St. (though I think they could find home in the FCS Southland)
Possible FCS drops
Monmouth
Rhode Island
CCSU
Sacred Heart
I dont see the southland having any value to NMSU even if they were to drop down but the reality for them and most FCS schools that bleed cash is that they should drop football but none have the guts and they will layoff teachers and give the students a worse education for their money rather than do the right thing...

The Southland at least has Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston St. in basketball, and the conference is TX/LA centric so a NM team could fit in in football regionally.
NMSU has over 600 losses. They're not going anywhere.

So true.
NMSU should join the Southland instead of going indy, They simply re not equipped to do that and are one of the many schools who can't even meet the minimum 15k attendance number.
Absolutely ridiculous for these schools with AD budgets in the 20's and high school attendance to be trying to compete in FBS with schools who have 180 million$ AD budgets and 100k fans at games.
Morehead State(Pioneer League).
UAB, and this time they will drop it for good.
Baylor, and they won't be the one making the decision.

Do you know how far Enema's U is from the closest Southland school? Texas is geographically enormous, NMSU is closer to UNLV than it is to SFA and Sam. ACU is about the only close SLC school.
All P5 schools should drop football.

How? Penn State has football.
UMass is a possibility if they don't get an AAC invite. I'm not sure how long they can survive as an independent and they have no desire moving their basketball team to C-USA/MAC/Sun Belt.

If you are going to use the term (affectionate for insiders, derogotory for outsiders) you need to get it right. FIFY.
I suspect that if FBS independence becomes unsustainable for NMSU the Aggies would drop football rather than reclassify FCS, no FCS league offers significant travel savings and it means foregoing the regular home games with UTEP and New Mexico. The only scenario where they might consider FCS would be if they got other sports into the Valley, then they might give it a shot in the MVFC.
UAB if they remain stuck with the cap on school transfers probably do eventually get starved into dropping again unless community interest stays high.

I don't think NMSU will ever drop football because they would have the stigma of being the only land grant university to drop football. While I do think that isn't likely that NMSU will wind up in the AAC, MWC, or C-USA, I do think they might be able to work something out with the SunBelt or a future western-based FBS conference.
Previously, I was thinking EMU was a sure bet to drop football, although I was hoping they wouldn't. EMU came back in a big way, so I think they're safe for awhile.
As for FCS, Sacred Heart could be a possibility along with Monmouth. I think Marist is a possibility as well, although I really hope all three keep football. But if they can't afford it, they can't afford it, and truthfully and I'm saying this from experience, there's nothing wrong with being a non-football school. I definitely think CCSU will find a way to keep football though as will Rhode Island.
