Quote:The Obama administration pumped more than $7 billion into an education program, first authorized under President George W. Bush, that had no impact on student achievement – according to a report released by the Department of Education in the final days of the 44th president’s term.

The Department of Education’s findings were contained in its “School Improvement Grants: Implementation and Effectiveness” report. The study could energize the debate over national education policy just as the Senate considers President Trump’s controversial pick to lead the department, Betsy DeVos, an outspoken school choice advocate who has questioned the way federal education dollars are spent.

“The timing of this report is so important and so interesting – this could have a positive influence on her confirmation,” American Enterprise Institute resident fellow Andy Smarick told Fox News.

Like I said, a waste of money. Private schools all the way.
Public education has to be torn down to be turned into something effective.

There are too many competing layers of interests all working against one another.

The public education system is the greatest source of inequality in America today. It's also the biggest obstacle in the way of economic advancement.

In other words, make it impossible for non-christian or LGBT persons to get an education or to work in education.
Four posts. Impressive but I'm pretty sure that's not the record.
Tom, it really concerns me that you see literally EVERYTHING through a prism of intentional discrimination against your kind. Find a good counselor and get some therapy before you start acting out on your delusions.

Our public schools suck, particularly those in big cities under Democrat control. And in those places, they suck for everyone equally.

Don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but perhaps things like this study, by the very Dept. of "education" themselves (amazing to me), and the appointment of someone like DeVos can provide a start.

There is just SO much freaking money out there just getting flushed and we have schools that are SO dysfunctional, you'd think the parents if no one else would be demanding change. I guess just too many of them out there simply don't give a damn.

I know when I worked for Arlington schools we were considered a glorified baby sitting service by many.

From that bastion of right wing propaganda NPR:
http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/10/1...ntent=2043

Quote:As we've reported, the rising graduation rate reflects genuine progress, such as closing high schools termed "dropout factories," but also questionable strategies by states and localities to increase their numbers.

"For many students, a high school diploma is not a passport to opportunity, it's a ticket to nowhere," says Michael Cohen, president of Achieve, a national nonprofit that's long advocated for higher standards and graduation requirements.

Cohen points out that roughly half of states now offer multiple diplomas. Some of those credentials are rigorous, some aren't. "You don't know how many students who were in that graduation rate actually completed a rigorous course of study. We're not transparent about that. We're concealing a problem."

In many places, the high school graduation exam is also a low bar, Cohen says, while some states have dropped it altogether.

Just last month, in a major school funding ruling, Connecticut Superior Court Judge Thomas Moukawsher excoriated his state for watered down graduation standards that, he says, have already resulted "in unready children being sent to high school, handed degrees, and left, if they can scrape together the money, to buy basic skills at a community college."

It's difficult to know which states earned this uptick in graduation rates through high standards and hard work and which states achieved it through shortcuts and lowered expectations. In some cases, it's all of the above.

oh ok, then what did the Department of Education do under Obama? Not a damn thing? 07-coffee3
So you imply CAUSATION that Obama's DOEd's spending resulted in a higher graduation rate. When UTSA said that graduation requirements had changed, you asked him to provide links, and he readily did. Now you are saying the graduation requirements were dropped as a state initiative, not Obama's DOE.

How in the hell does that have anything to do with the fact that an internal DOEd report found that despite billions of dollars of "investment", no meaningful improvement in student achievement was noted.

Don't you ever tire of being a useless troll? You are the absolute worst poster on this forum.
