Think the Athletic Department needs a shake-up, top to bottom.
There is no excuse for this type of management. How can they expect supporters to give big $ when they cannot account for where money is going? More than 1 head needs to roll.

Yep.

As I wrote on another post: Nero fiddled while Rome burned. There is simply no good reason why UT isn't one of the athletic flagships of the MAC. We should be winning 1 MAC championship in one sport or another every year; instead, we go years between winning championships in anything. This audit debacle just adds fuel to the fire and is another example of too much complacency over the past decade. In performance management there's a saying: what gets measured, gets done. Might be time to re-examine what's being measured.

Yep. It's time.
Quote:He made more than $2,000 worth of delayed deposits after the university began its audit.

He must have known he wasn't doing things properly.

Lazy and sloppy practices at best.
Why am I not surprised????
The university president MUST show some leadership here.

Look at the track record: Football players getting bribed, Basketball players getting bribed, football player(s) (Cameron) sustaining serious injuries because a coach (Beckman) did not do things right, a basketball coach (Cross) who spent more time chasing women than coaching, and total mediocrity currently in men's and women's basketball. It is time for MOB and his people to exit.
I believe all the major roles in the Athletic Department have remained the same for the past 20 or so years, am I right?
Why are they not pursuing criminal or civil charges?

Hard to argue with that.

Many of the sports administration were in place before MOB was hired. Seems they have lifetime jobs.

Over the extent of time you're talking, I can easily imagine any organization is going to have more problems than that.

As I understand it, UT athletics is one of the more cost effective in the MAC? Solid donations incoming? I posted quite some time ago, there's a time to change the AD's department and I'd rather it happen under this administration with AD O'Brian in place to aid that transition. Nothing's changed. He's done an excellent job.

On MY wish list would be more emphasis on the non-revenues. Track is the basis of human performance, not football, not basketball. As for football and basketball, booting winning coaches simply because they're not winning the big apple is foolish. JMHO Changing coaches in a winning situation is done with a plan because unless you have someone that you know wants the position that has already had the success you're looking for, it's a crap shoot. It's panic and people who panic, don't win.

If finanacial oversight has been a problem in the AD's office, then it's probably based upon overall accepted practice from a time gone by and is probably going on in many departments throughout the university. Be thankful this one has apparently been minor.

I honestly wouldn't doubt there are quite a few local public and private institutions used to cash operations, that could use a little looking at since that casino opened. 03-wink

Money from donors goes to the UT Foundation and is well documented.

I'm pretty sure the rocket fund and donor dollars are recorded and tracked by the UT foundation. You money is extremely safe there. No hanky panky.

I'm going to write a letter to the President.
This is management on a lemonade stand quality level.

It is remarkable that incompetence to this degree could exist in an organization of this size. The athletic department isn't so big that everyone doesn't know exactly what is going on. And all there expense reports were getting paid back with cash...so...red flags???

Paying sales taxes out of non-retail accounts?

All the cash from parking, the Rocky Locker, etc, oh my god this was bad.

If you earmark your donations to the athletic department they ultimately wind up in the hands of these same individuals who clearly had no policy and procedure for the accounting of funds.

This is such a damning audit and report.
So disappointing that this could happen here.
Not theft...that can happen anywhere...but the incompetence.

Clearly people above and on the same administrative level as this associate athletic director for finance knew about this based on the type of violations.
Wow what a joke. I worked at Rocky's Locker for around 6 months. I could have told you this was going on. He was never around the store and when he was it always just felt wrong. I left because the lack of leadership from his staff and because the entire leadership team was the definition of disorganized. He let the female employees have whatever they wanted and was not respected by any of the student workers (neither were his 2 female puppets)

UT needs to clean house in the athletic department, including FIRING Mike O'Brien!!

From reading the blade article it seems like the problem is cash control on the athletic operations side. Cash collected from parking and Rocky's Locker. Completely different pools of money when talking about donor dollars. The day to day guy would not see donor dollars cross his desk. It read as if there was no oversight on day to day operations with cash, not credit cards. Those reimbursement errors were operations.

Donor dollars go to the UT Foundation not directly to Athletics.
