I've been thinking about the idea of a Go5 playoff and I'm beginning to like the idea. We all know none of us will have a chance at the 4 team playoff so why not have our own national championship? If you model it after the NFL, you would take the 5 conference champions plus an at-large. The seeds are placed based on polls or something similar so the they would be 1-5 and the at large would be 6th. The top two seeds would get a first round bye and the highest seeds hosts

So this year it would have looked similar to this

1. Western Michigan (MAC Champion)
2. San Diego State (MWC Champion)
3. Western Kentucky (C-USA Champion)
4. Temple (AAC Champion)
5. Appalachian State (SBC Champion)
6. South Florida (AAC at-large)

Week 1
Game 1: (6) South Florida vs (3) Western Kentucky (H)
Game 2: (5) Appalachian State vs (4) Temple (H)

Week 2
Game 3: Winner of Game 1 vs (1) Western Michigan (H)
Game 4: Winner of Game 2 vs (2) San Diego State (H)

Week 3
Championship Game: Winner of Game 3 vs Winner of Game 4, highest seed hosts

I think that would be really exciting to watch and I think people would watch.
No.
It would be fun, but it also separates us from the rest of FBS, so my vote would be a no. Once the P5 fully separate themselves, a playoff like this will be a nice consolation prize, but until then, lets not do anything to help them push us down to a lower level.
Why not just go back to fcs play?

That's fine if y'all don't agree with me as it's just my opinion. I just think it would be more fun than bowls and the current playoff will never allow any of our schools to be national champions so the only realistic goals we can have is a conference championship and a bowl win. Of all the college football teams only the Go5 can't realistically win a NC.
It would be better than the bowls in a vacuum, but the cost is too great.

The cost doesn't seem to affect the 24 FCS teams in their playoffs

No.

The 'cost' of self relegating to second class citizens.

I don't know when the CFP expands, but it will happen. I don't know how large the format will need to grow before the G5 has a shot at inclusion(my guess is 8) and I expect even at 16 we may not get automatic inclusion, but I'll tell you this much, whatever chance we have now, even if it's 1% goes to 0%(likely forever) if we sign up for this JV nonsense.

Not just no, but no ******* way.
The Go5 is already second class citizens who are left with our little meaningless bowl games. Yay

Then wouldn't creating some bowls that wouldn't be meaningless be a better option? The G5 should invest some of the CFP money into a series of high pay out bowls (payouts high enough to attract decent selections from the P5---on a level of the Liberty, Music City, and Gator Bowls) that would serve as the post season landing spot for the 4 G5 champs not heading to the access bowl. That way we improve the G5 post season without boxing ourselves into some sort of second class FBS ghetto.
Here's the problem for us. When the CFP contract expires in 2025 it will occur within a year or two of several of the P5 conferences needing to renegotiate their TV deals. This sets up not well for all of us.

I've seen prognostications that range from everything to the four super conferences to culling all the hanger-ons and creating a football only playoff eligible groups of schools (i.e. 24 to 32 schools) that would compete against each other in an NFL-type arrangement.

We snarl our noses about the effects of subscriber losses at ESPN on G5 conferences but the reality is that it can and likely will get much, much worse. Someone mentioned in another thread about ESPN protecting its investment. These types of ideas above have traction for that very reason. It's why ESPN floated this story. If they can create another FBS playoff it a) probably does add another revenue generator for them and b) affords a place to dump football schools that don't quite meet the network's criteria (think Kansas, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, etc.). They still want all these schools to do what they do for them in basketball but want the really profitable schools in football (think Bama, Ohio State, USC, Texas, etc.) to separate themselves to help them make even more profits. And the educational leaders at these schools are too stupid to stand up against it as they see the power and money there for the taking.

It really is a shame where this is going. I have no idea what the next round looks like but the one thing I think we've been clamoring for (i.e. a playoff) believing it was going to help our cause is going to have the opposite effect and force some sort of split for football only purposes.

Perhaps our biggest problem is that we don't have anyone fighting for us any longer. Everyone with a voice has gone silent. Perhaps Orin Hatch will step up his game again once Utah is left out of the new college football coalition that is formed - made up of a few dozen football teams.

So let's just steer into the skid, wave the white flag, and sign up for a tournament that will get nominally more coverage and respect than the FCS playoffs because it would be marginally better than the bowl system we have now.

I couldn't give a **** less about the FCS playoffs and if not for NDSU's dominance I'd struggle to name more than just the most recent one or two champions.

On top of all that, even though it would be "our" tournament, what makes you think they'd let us play a six team format? That would give us three weeks of football, which means that the "championship" 07-coffee3 would be played sometime between the first round of the CFP and the title game and you'd also have NFL wildcard weekend to contend with. I'm sure the coverage would be top notch.

If it was this year, the final game of this JV tournament you're proposing would have been played Friday night or Saturday at noon. Nevermind with you having it set as a home game for the higher seed, it would really throw things out of whack. Suppose that it ended up as SDSU vs WKU and they had decided on a noon EST Saturday kick. Have fun with that 9am local time kickoff! 04-cheers

There are a lot of bad ideas on message boards, this one is one of the worst.

"Our" National Championship was played last night. We are not 1-AA or anything else. We are 1-A / FBS football. The fight should be for equal access Not segregation which is what Roy Kramer & Co have been trying to do for decades.

Roy Kramer & Co. love people like you.

Yea just like the old Bowl system is all we will ever have.
Yea just like the BCS is all we will ever have.
Yea just like the BCS #1 vs #2 is all we will ever have.
Yea just like the current 4 team playoff is all we will ever have.

You're right lets just continue to think we won't ever have anything else.

I doubt he was talking monetary and if you aren't either their playoff has been in place for decades and even expanded to 24. The cost of segregation is far greater than monetary.

Yes, I spoke to this at great length in subsequent replies.
