1. It snowed, at one point the field was covered with snow/ice.
2. The depth chart stayed the same as it ended last year. For obvious reasons, there has been no games or practices for people to pass up others.
3. That being said, Skinner was with the ones, Morris was next followed by Devine.
4. Skinner really did not do anything spectacular. He made one nice pass. Morris looked very sluggish, looked like an athlete who was learning how to play QB, he did not look like a QB, just my opinion. Devine on the other hand, very solid looking guy physique wise, huge calves. Great arm, holds the ball up high when he goes back. We will not be disappointed if he is our QB. The ball snaps out of his hand when he throws the ball.
5. Practice was very intense, it was also very structured. The periods were different than in the past, I dont know if this was going to change regardless of us having a new coach or if it was something Coach Kueck had done.
6. Players were not allowed to set on the bench, if they were not involved in the drill then they were on the sideline.
7. Matt Morris looked good at receiver.
8. There were many times when Williams and Bradshaw were on the field at the same time. Of those times, Bradshaw was split out wide with Williams in the backfield.
9. First team on the offensive line Cook, Inman, Legursky, Baynes, and Barnes, that is from left to right. Bullock was not there, but he may have had class. I am not sure, but I dont think Elcess is on the team any longer.
10. Defensive starters included on the line, Thomas, Wright, Garrett, and Tinker. Linebackers were Thornton, Couch and Hopkins. DB's were Smith, Clark, Royal and Keyes. Keep in mind some players were not there for a variety of reasons.
11. Bradshaw looks quicker than ever. Chris Hawkins (transfer from UNC) looked good he was with the twos.
12. Like I said, it appeared that they basically came out the first day, took the end of the season depth chart, crossed out the seniors and bumped everyone else up, and ran with it.
13. Kueck conducts a very nice practice. At the end of practice everyone charged to the middle of the field, but it was not to his liking, he sent them back to do it again, which they did. They left the field pumped. A very good looking, sharp, crisp practice, with the only down thing being a bunch of dropped passes.
14. Fitzgerald also looked good at receiver, as did Lauzon.
Thanks for the update '05, is it september yet
It was super cold and windy, I had to leave early to take a quiz. Thanks for the report, hope to join the crowd next time.

Thanks for the report. It is much appreciated. What is the story with Elcess?
Some pictures from practice.

Nice pictures Greg.

You can see in the last picture the size of Devines legs.

He is a very solid quarterback.
so MR skiner was with the ones, that is a change from last offseason isn't it? Doesn't speak well for ole bernard's troubles.
No, Skinner was number three at the end of the year, Stan and GG left, he goes to one to start the spring.

Morris and Devine got a lot of reps.
ok. so here is the deal.......

QBs
Skinner was with the ones will stay with the ones... looked good with the ones. He made some good passes, not that he didnt make mistakes either, but he did very well. There was a GREAT pass into coverage. DT almost got ahold of him and couldn't manage before Skinner got it off to a reciever across the middle. A little bit of work on the long ball and the confidence behind it (it might be there, he just doesnt realize it).

B.Morris looked sluggish today. Didn't pass well today. Any time his route was off he didnt' see the rest of the field enough to throw to other people. He was covered well many times, dropped the ball twice, and ended up tryin to run it back to the line of scrimmage a few times. Defintaly not a good day for Morris.

Devine has a weird ball rotation. Didn't throw well once coverage was brought on. Made multiple mistakes as far as throwing too low, too high, too short, etc. Made a few nice passes. Wasn't the qb of hype.

Recievers:
I will say this now.... Matt Morris will be among the ones by the end of the season. He has amazing footwork and is quick!! Lauzon had a very strong showing today. Fitz made some crazy catches. Hargrove.... ::sighs:: he dropped a few, and Moore was sidelined for the day.

Tight Ends:
Mullins showed strong. He looks to be turning out a tremendous leader and I think he will make a strong showing on the season. Shope is our number 2 now, great blocker. Looks to be Bragg at 3 and Parkhurst at 4, though that's just the way it appears now.... remember... we still have a few more coming in for fall.

OLine:
Looking good guys! This quicker, more passionate version of last years line is an improvement I am VERY happy with. They protected well (even against a strong, pumped D) and I think they are already more jelled now as a line than last year at the end of the season.

Defense:
Strong ones! They were all over our offense. The defense is pumped up especially DT. Man is he gonna have a good year! And Garrett.... if that boy can stay with his head in the game.... he will pull out an amazing season this year and most likely be one of the best DTs we have ever had.

DLine:
The boys looked strong across the front. Expect Thomas and Garrett to have great years (as I said). I dont think there will be a tremendous drop off on line strength from last year. A little less experience maybe, but they will be fine.

Linebackers:
And you guys were worried! They look great. The ones were backed up by strong twos.... no they dont have the most experience in the world, but they look very very nice.

Safetys and DBs:
Willie Smith is all over the place. Look for him to step up this year. Hawkins preformed well. Keyes looked as though he's under the weather. Ivan Clark was kicking it up. We have some strong guys at these positions.

Special Teams:
I love the kickers! :) They were a little slow to start at first, but after a little bit of warming up they didnt look bad. Ian said not to be TO critical of him today... its his first day back 03-wink Ian is a better punter than Urrego, Daniel has a weird ball path. But other than that I have no complaints.

They are working hard on protection for punting. Hard to tell how well they'll work the way they were practicing (no D) but I'm sure they'll be fine, I think that most of the guys are back from last year. Personal protection they aren't sure on.... looks to be maybe Wilks? Who knows.

Mullins looked great at long snapper though. Another good year for him at this position.

Overall:
Overall I am very impressed with this team. Kueck did a bang up job of keeping everyone focused and on their games. There are strong showings of seniors and upperclassmen, I dont think they'll be a leadership problem this year. I'm excited for this season and excited to watch this team continue to grow together. Conf might have another thing coming if they think we're gonna let them run over us!

GO HERD!!!
Wait a sec... something isn't right here.

Skinner made MANY more mistakes than Devine did. Let us not forget Skinner throwing the ball 15 yards short on a deep route. Devine WAS the QB of all the hype, even though it's only the first practice.

Skinner will not be our quarterback.
Good report...

The weird rotation on Devines ball you are talking about....

umm yeeahh, that is called a tight spiral, which is something that neither of the other QB's threw today.

It is funny reading some of your reports and see who your favorites are, it is very easy to tell.

Skinner, will not "stay with the ones." He was with the ones today and for some of this spring because that is where he ended last season. He ended at number three with the first two guys having graduated.
more than one person helped write this report.... so who is whos favorite?? NA NA NAH NA NAH NA!!!

seriously though. a couple of the guys i think will be good aren't my favs. i do have favs (we all do), and not all of them were mentioned......

umm... and as far as devine goes.... he's a good qb. and he made some mistakes..... but i dont know that he has what it takes. his ball path is low. skinner made some good passes and made a lot of mistakes also. we'll just see who is better at fixing what they did wrong.....
Skinner slings a ball that does not spiral.

Devine holds the ball up high and throws at the top of his followthrough.
We need 1 QB to get us though 1 season and then Barnard or Beardain can take over for us.
thank you both for your practice reports even if one may be a little biased 03-wink

That is the Oline I figured we would see--Bullock may have missed practice if he had a class on the other side of campus. No joke. Has anyone been behind him on a sidewalk trying to get to class, that guy can't move! Sounds like you guys are optimistic about the season, that makes me feel better. I've been a little worried these last few days..

good work kids 04-bow
And, just as I predicted, Kat doesn't show up. Man am I good 04-rock

Classic. 04-bow

No more wounded ducks flying at Marshall Stadium. :D
grrchemgrl Wrote:Ian is a better punter than Urrego,
Why do you think this? Is this based off punt yardage because that was never Ian's problem. Did he get quicker on getting rid of the ball? (and did he catch them all? 05-mafia )
I love the kickers! They were a little slow to start at first, but after a little bit of warming up they didnt look bad. Umm, ok.

Urrego has a weird ball path because he is left footed. Biagi is punting better than Urego. At least today he was.
You guys lay off Ian!!! 05-nono

I like the disputing reports, more opinions = more fun!

I'll be adding mine as well when I can make a longer bit of practice.
