Lufile played hard for the Bucs, best wishes to him. Also of note that Arkansas Tech likely has the worst nickname in college sports, the "wonder boys."

The women are called The Golden Suns.. though The Wonder Women would be kind of cool.. and could call the men's teams The Golden Sons..

I think there is a team in California that has the nickname "Dirtbags"

You want a good laugh look up the team names of Rhode Island School of Design hockey and basketball AND the mascot (he works for both)
and the hockey cheer.. it makes the Furman cheer sound like tame.
There's the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, apparently a slimy yellow mollusk.

The Fighting Pickles of North Carolina School of the Arts.

The Fighting Okra of Delta State (Mississippi)

The Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello

The venerable Horned Frogs of TCU, godfather of odd mascots

The Geoducks of Evergreen State (Washington), apparently another mollusk, pronounced "gooey ducks", which inspires the following biologically appropriate cheer:
"Go, Geoducks go,
Through the mud and the sand,
let's go.
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.
Go, Geoducks go,
Stretch your necks when the tide is low
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out."

But Rod is right, RISD is in a whole other category, especially the mascot and hockey team. http://www.oddee.com/item_96800.aspx

RISD makes for a real family atmosphere at the games. That one takes things a little too far.
Wow those are all pretty awful. RISD should show better taste though.

It's not the official mascot. It's one of those things a student started and the tradition just grew from there. I'm sure the administration doesn't roll with it in any form.

.

Long Beach State, the baseball team only. The rest are the 49ers

But it IS the name the team. that is where the idea for the mascot came from and I as I said he works for the basketball team and their less offensive name as well (Basketball team is a masterful example of double meaning)
All of the above are unusual but at least they have some geographical significance. We're a land locked pirate for crying out loud.

Well it comes from the French word Boucan..... to smoke meat. A Boucaner was someone who smoked/cured meat.

Lol, that seems more realistic than Ponce De Leon sailing up the Tennessee River.

Interesting, no one ever criticizes Auburn for being the "Tigers". What does Alabama have to do with a jungle creature anyway?
My favorite of all time has to be Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. Hands down the best team name in my opinion.

Seems I remember reading sometime ago that tigers are one of the most popular mascots, regardless of sport, school, division, HS, college, etc.
Bennie is averaging a double-double for Arkansas State. Sounds like he landed in the right spot, and I bet he's having a lot of fun playing this year.

Probably, there are 3 (out 14) in the SEC alone.
Also lots of Bulldogs and Wildcats.

Not the Tennessee river. Cmon man there is a huge underground river below ETSU campus and pirates would sail all the way up from the coast in an underground river cavern and bury their treasure here. Know the back story u pleb
