Reports say Jimbo Fisher's contract extension keeps him in Tallahassee and gives him new abilities to reward assistants.

ESPN:
Fisher's base salary will increase an additional $250,000 to $5.5 million, beginning in 2017. That is the fifth-highest salary nationally, according to a USA Today database. If the contract is extended the additional two seasons, Fisher would make $5.65 million in the first season and $5.75 million in the second.

Fully guaranteed. FSU is on the hook for a lot of money on this one.

I get that it probably has to be done. Tom Herman's deal was almost as guaranteed (though shorter). So if you lost Jimbo to someone else, you'd probably be guaranteeing the new guy just as much. IF you're lucky enough to sign the top guy.

I personally don't think coaching salaries are that out of hand...it's these guaranteed buyouts that I hate. The salary itself is worth every penny if the guy wins...and doesn't cost you anything if you fire him. The buyouts are the crazy part.

Don't think about Mack Brown. Don't think about Mack Brown. Don't think about Mack Brown.

How do you like the way HIS end of the buyout is structured? If he leaves, he must pay ALL of his assistant coaches salaries* through term...

* the ones who are NOT retained by FSU. That means if he leaves, he either leaves alone (and hopes the school doesn't clean house), or shell out a small fortune.

At least, that's how I understand it - you Seminole guys may have more insight?

Yep, that's basically it.

I like the concept. He's asked for a lot for assistants and staff (like he should), including a big guaranteed raise for DC Charles Kelly to keep him from going to Auburn last year. The same DC Charles Kelly that rewarded the contract by fielded a totally incompetent defense for about 3/4th of the season.

So it seriously reduces the risk of FSU making those kind of investments in staff, with the premise of Jimbo turning around and taking another job. Alabama will open eventually, LSU will always be an issue if it opens, there was a fair amount of Texas/Jimbo talk before they hired Strong. And Jimbo never categorically takes himself off the market when it happens.

So yeah, for a guy that asks for a lot, I do like that he's going to have that skin in the game and he can't easily walk away from it. It should make it a little more likely that FSU can get in play for some of these super-coordinators/recruiters, which they've really never done under Jimbo. If he's not too stubborn to ever make a change.

So the incentive is, if he leaves - take all his assistants with him? I thought schools liked to keep a couple of assistants to appease the players?

I can see this helping recruiting at FSU, not hurting it. Other schools......not so much.

No, the idea is that if Jimbo says "I need coach x for 1.5M year guaranteed" he can't walk away from that to Alabama or the NFL and foot FSU with the bill. The more he insists FSU spends on assistants, the more he's on the hook for.

That makes it both harder for him to leave the bigger commitment FSU makes to his staff, and makes sure FSU isn't saddled with a paying out the contracts of a bunch of assistants they don't want any more. Yes, some coaches are retained sometimes, but in most cases a new coach is going to want his guys, especially coordinators.

Thanks! It makes more sense that way.
