Since there has been some talk of Wichita St joining the AAC for basketball, they are at #20. I think that they'd be a great add, but the AAC would need a provision to opt-out if their program completely tanks, at some point. (Although I really think that the AAC needs to make a play to add the best of the MWC and push for P6 inclusion as that is what is needed for a secure future. AAC + BYU, Boise St, Colorado St, and San Diego St...Add Army and Air Force for football only if needed to increase political pressure for P6 push.)

WSU has a long history of being much better than 1/2 of the AAC, even back to MVC days when Memphis was a member. The bigger question is whether USF, Tulane, ECU & UCF will ever produce a good BB program.

I agree and I don't have an issue with adding WSU, right now. No one would dispute that our basketball needs a little more oomph. USF, Tulane, ECU & UCF are full members. If WSU is basketball only, we should have some provision to move on if their basketball sux over a period of X years - not that I expect that to happen.
Thanks for the conference mate rankings.
I wonder if we can keep 7 teams in the top 100.
Imho the problem with AAC basketball isn't that we don't have enough historically great basketball schools such as Memphis, UConn, Temple, and Cincy, but that those schools aren't achieving at the levels they should be--at least this year with the exception of Cincy. WSU is also a great program, but the real issue is getting our own great programs back up to par. To me, adding WSU looks too much like an easy fix. I'm not necessarily opposed to the addition, just thinking we maybe should play to our existing strengths.

The fact that those schools are in a G5 conference and would much rather be in a P5 conference probably mitigates against their basketball programs getting a whole lot better until something changes with that scenario.

I mean, we beat FSU and WVU, which are two very good wins. The problem otherwise is that we're missing two starters, and our two seniors both stink. Because of all that, we're relying on three true freshmen playing 27.4, 23.7 and 12.8 MPG, and two true sophomores playing 34.3 and 16.1 MPG.

We have a lot of young players playing major minutes after not really playing much last year, or being in high school last year. We should be much better next year if Josh Brown redshirts, and Trey Lowe somehow gets healthy enough to play.

Excuses don't help my SOS rankings.
Not making excuses. Just pointing out that most teams that aren't Duke or Kentucky would struggle when relying on underclassmen.

Question ... "Do you think that adding Wichita State will make a difference in the next AAC contractual negotiations with ESPN and other major networks?"

Personally, I think that they should stay the course (i.e., team-wise with respect to conference affiliation) unless there is a tangible contractual benefit from the addition ... 07-coffee3. We've got some programs with fairly decent NCAA basketball tournament pedigrees (i.e., albeit struggling lately).

The AAC's biggest problem is coach retention in football. New contract agreement could give the conference a little more stability in that area.

I think it would. By how much, I have no idea. If you implement the ideas in the "12-team scheduling idea" thread, you could ensure the generation of more high-level conference games which would have increased value. If you assume that WSU makes The Dance more times than not, you have their NCAA credit to share. It is possible that the overall increase in other team's RPI and tournament resume (as a result of playing WSU) could result in yet another NCAA Tourney team. There is NO DOUBT that adding WSU would increase overall revenue by some degree. It probably doesn't hurt to get the Koch brothers in the fold, either.

There is some talk about not wanting to become the Big East with a mix of football and non-football schools, but this is a very different situation. We already have one football-only school and we'd add one basketball-only school. There is no power-struggle like the Big East had - there is no question that the all-sports schools are still in charge. You are just adding a few pieces to strengthen the overall product offering.
