Leaked out that AAC is interested in adding WSU for basketball only.

This is a clear sign that the AAC is already feeling the pressure of the TV revenue squeeze.

If true a smart move by the AAC. If nothing else it bolsters their basketball for increasing revenue through the NCAA tournament units.

Then why would they want another mouth to feed?

If it's basketball only they would get a smaller percentage than the rest of the full members and would ostensibly bring more value to the league's contract than they would have to pay out to Wichita St.
I didn't think you could break up your sports between leagues like that unless it's a case of a sport not offered by your conference.

Not sure if you're just referring to the financial aspects, but C-USA 1.0 was a mixed league this way and I know the CAA currently does the same thing.

Army (IA Football independent), Navy (AAC Football Only) play the rest of their sports in the Patriot League.. Hawai'i plays football in the MWC but moved the rest of their sports to the Big West.

What you can't do is what Davidson done for 2 years in the 90s and that is have most of your sports classified as DI and them move something to DII. I know some DI Hockey, Field Hockey and Lacrosse schools do that and I assume they have a waiver for it.
It's not a NCAA rule, but certain conferences also have rules. Frankly, it would surprise me if the MVC allowed WSU to leave for basketball without kicking out the other sports.
Rules, Customs, Traditions, and Practices tend to evaporate pretty quickly in the face of "MO MONEY"! While I really don't think CUSA should consider a BB Only, an Olympics Only, or a FB Only school for admission; don't think for a minute that we would not do it too if it means MO MONEY.

You can for football, but the rest of your sports have to be in the same conference unless you sponsor a sport your league doesn't (like UK, unm, and usc being in cusa for soccer)
I don't think they can just add basketball can they?

Trade them USM football. MVC has to move up to FBS.
Whether they do or don't the point is they won't get football money and would get a reduced share than the rest of the league. But probably more than they make now.
They can do whatever they want.. It's not like "one sport only" teams are unicorns
Isn't Wichita State talking about starting football again? Maybe joining the AAC for basketball is the first step. I just don't Wichita State fielding a competitive FB team.

An old North Texas cheer when playing Wichita State in the old Missouri Valley Conference......

Thanks for the lesson...

Here's the thing, the Patriot League and Big West don't offer FBS football, which is why Army, Navy, and Hawaii can play independent, in the AAC and MWC.

Wichita State currently play in the Missouri Valley, which obviously offers D1 MBB, which is why I was suggesting they wouldn't be able to move only MBB to the AAC.

See above
Pretty sure Wichita would be added as a full Olympic sports member. Writers often use the term "basketball only" when what they really mean is "non-football member" or "Olympic sports only" member. Frankly, the AAC could use the extra baseball team as much as the extra basketball team.

As for "feeling the squeeze" for income---the current ESPN tv agreement doesn't expire until the 2019-2020 season. The article describing the move actually indicates the addition would reduce per team income over the short term. The AAC would be adding the school to improve the performance of the league. Any added TV value would likely not be realized for several years.

That said, the Navy contract with CBS-Sports expires in 2018. It's possible the AAC, which has enjoyed much higher than expected tv ratings, might be positioning themselves for an early renegotiation/extension. The MAC used the tactic and came away with a pretty solid raise.

That may or may not be the case. The MVC usually gets at least 3 teams to the dance regularly and they have a pretty decent TV contract for a basketball only conference. The thing is I can't see the MVC keeping them in all other sports, they would probably get expelled from the MVC. Then the question is where do you put your other sports and would any conference take them without basketball. The Summit, Horizon and maybe the Big Sky would be the only conference they could hope for, but as I said without their basketball I wouldn't want them.

I think UConn gets fed up with the AAC in a few years and puts their basketball in the BE and hangs their football program out to dry in the indys. Esp if the BXII finally comes calling for 2 programs and one is Cincy. Honestly I could see Memphis doing the same thing.

I agree with you. I fail to see what's in this move for Wichita St. 01-wingedeagle
