This might be Chicago State's last gasp as a DI program. The school had less than 100 freshman, many of whom were on scholarship for athletics. Now the school is proposing starting football and going to the Pioneer League.

Chicago St may well be the hang up with the Big Sky / WAC reorganization. Nobody wants them. Even the Slummit kicked them out. Starting football would be viewed by Chicago St admin as a way to placate the WAC. They can't afford DI now or even have hot water in their dorms, but they want to expand the costs?

Do they have a place to play?
What a joke.

Hopefully the Illinois board of higher ed (or whatever it's called) will disallow this silliness, and make post haste with merging CSU into NE ILL, including dropping all varsity athletics (as NEIU did).

With the political strings in Chicago and Illinois, all days are April Fools Day.

The WAC needs them gone to get other schools aboard.
this is what happens when you hire David State as your university president
Chicago State...

Worst program in D-I history. This was Kanye West's school BTW...

The reorganization is a pipe dream. I'm not sure if you're trolling at this point.
Don't insult pipes!

Wow, it all makes sense now.
Is there anyone attending Chicago St that isn't a varsity athlete? 100 freshmen!? My tiny D3 school brought in classes of 400 or more and the place felt extremely tiny. This school needs to close plain and simple--or at least discontinue athletics and refocus their efforts to attract non-traditional students to their commuter campus.
Well, my guess is they get a lot of transfers in at a level older than freshman year. Still ...
It is a travesty and crime that Chicago State gets one cent of public funding. The institution is an embarassment and slap in the face to higher education everywhere. No way this possibly gets approved, but the fact that they remain open after all the scandals and controversies is a joke.

It's less than 100 freshman, but can't remember the number. No student will enroll there now without getting paid to do it as it might not be there in the future.

Chicago St is just looking for handouts from the state and a football team is one way they can get students to enroll. How Illinois puts up with the waste there is another question, but Jesse Jackson and his cohorts have a lot of power. Maybe they cannot use the $600 k that went to their fired President to fund the football team.
"Hey, we're bleeding money here, but we got a plan! Now, we'll bleed even more money, and it might not work, but hear us out..."

A typical conversation between Chicago State administrators.

send out layoff notices to 900 employees

start football

profit!
I sort of see their logic. If they start a non-scholarship football team and find 100 kids willing to pay their way to go there, then that's a decent chunk of change for a school that might literally be running on change at this point.

It's a desperation heave and I don't think it'll work, but I think I see *why* they think it'll work.
