Uggggh - 2-21 in their building.

We've lost the last 15 in a row to Memphis. Lost the first 6 in the series. 10-36 overall.
Great job!

I would have added the game the two teams played on the biggest stage, the 1985 NCAA tournament.

I'm glad you didn't though, because I am recounting it tomorrow in TIBH.

Thanks! I had 10 more games I could have added but didn't. I would give anything to be at the 84 game. So many story lines.
I am very pleased Memphis and UAB renewed their rivalry and look forward to what could be a hotly contested game tomorrow.
Nobody tell our guys how much this rivalry means to the fans. Let them go into it like it's just another game...staying relaxed and loose like we were for SFA.
I literally HATE that school. Was committed to play football there until the coach recruiting me left and came to uab, which thankfully I followed. Deep history with that place.
It may be a huge rivalry game to us, but I think we have to win some games before Memphis considers it a rivalry.

The Andre Turner jumper. Ugh

Ponder was mauled I tell ya.

I was physically ill after that game.
What were games like in the pyramid? I can't picture what the space would look like.
The pyramid while cool in concept was a horrible arena. Abslutly no leg room and upper level extremely steep. Acoustic s were so bad that many music acts refused to play there.

It was set up like any other arena except with a huge amount of wasted space above the scoreboard

Ponder got fouled. Not only did I see it, but I heard the slap on his wrist as he shot.

Still bitter about that one.
That game is the only game I think I have ever seen a coach chase the refs into the tunnel after a game. Gene Barrow called it his most upsetting loss ever.
Can't remember who the tiggers played next but I do remember thinking it was winnable for either team still playing after that night. That was a Final Four appearance walking into the tunnel with the refs. What a great UAB team. Won the Great Alaska Shoot-out vs KU to start the season. I thought we were going to win the Memphis game right up until Turner hit that last shot. Sicker after that game than the UL loss in the Elite Eight.

A tough night but a great time to be a Blazer fan.
I thought that could have been a final 4 team as well.

Boston College then Oklahoma.

At one point late in the first half, Turner hipchecked Mitchell out of bounds forcing a turnover right in front of our bench. No call. We (the band) had a perfect view of the play and we came absolutely unglued and got warned for it. Turner should have picked up foul #4 right there. He finished with 4, commiting only one in the second half IIRC. Jack Gordon may have had better games, but I doubt it. He was an absolute beast that day. As evidenced by his 0-8, and 11 FTs, Jerome got mugged every time he got near the lane. When I think of that game, all I can see is Ponder elevating just inside the FT line and getting an arm and elbow across his forearms.

We (the band Golden Girls & Cheerleaders) got on a bus and came straight home to Birmingham. I couldn't speak from being hoarse until Wednesday.

Saturday, 3/16/85 I was at the Memphis Showboats vs. the Birmingham Stallions game at Legion Field which coincided with that NCAA appearance.

Without video you could tell how the game was going when either basketball team was doing well. There were a lot of headphones on during that football game.

The Memphis fans would let out a cheer and then the Birmingham fans. Until the basketball game ended hardly anyone was paying attention to the football game.

The Stallions won 34-19.

That was the year Memphis went to the Final Four with Three Big Eas Schools.
