Title: Bidding war for Tom Herman could impact coaching searches across college football

"There were various media reports that Houston coach Tom Herman had become the primary target at LSU, which may have moved on from Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher. However, sources have told Yahoo Sports that Texas remains a strong option for Herman..... The Baton Rouge Advocate is reporting that the LSU coaching search is down to two names: Herman and interim coach Ed Orgeron. If the school cannot land Herman, Orgeron is considered the fallback choice.

A potential bidding war between two power programs over Herman would affect the rest of the coaching landscape throughout college football.

Baylor, for instance, had been hoping for a shot at Herman – who was hired for his first head-coaching job at Houston by current Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades. But that was before Herman raised his stock another notch by blowing out Louisville last week, and before Strong and LSU interim coach Ed Orgeron were upset by Kansas and Florida, respectively.

That changed the marketplace, and not in Baylor’s favor. With Herman likely headed to either Austin or Baton Rouge, sources told Yahoo Sports that North Carolina coach Larry Fedora is a prime target for Baylor, where he once worked as a graduate assistant and still has friends and supporters... There are others on Baylor’s list, though, including California coach Sonny Dykes and SMU’s Chad Morris.....

Fedora could be a second-tier candidate at LSU or Texas, whichever school loses the Herman Sweepstakes.....

If the 62-year-old Tuberville retires or is fired, expect Cincinnati to look for a candidate with offensive expertise to revive a program that has stopped being fun to watch (the Bearcats have scored a total of 26 points in their past four games, all losses). Western Kentucky’s Jeff Brohm, 27-10 in three seasons as head coach of the Hilltoppers, could be a strong candidate if Cincinnati opens.

More ripples will be created Saturday. Purdue will play its final game under interim coach Gerad Parker and appears to be well down the road toward its next hire, with speculation centering on former LSU coach Les Miles and Fleck. However, both those coaches may be watching what’s happening elsewhere and weighing all their options, while maintaining conversations with Purdue."
Wow, the Baylor job is that attractive? So different than 10 years ago.
They will be giving Chad a 5 year contract at $4,900,900 a year and pay SMU over $3,000,000

I doubt Baylor was delusional enough to think they could land Herman, though I'm sure Forde is that delusional.

Please take Sonny Dykes. Pretty please?
I have no idea why Fedora or Dykes (especially Dykes) would be interested in Baylor. Baylor is historically a wasteland - before Briles arrived it had been 25 years and 5 coaches since they finished a season ranked.

And that's without even mentioning the other problems Baylor is facing right now.

I think they were hoping that a little personal touch would do the trick.

Baylor would be silly to if they didn't at least make the phone call.
Dykes has called SMU about our opening

Excellent. I would offer to help pay his buyout, but I'm pretty sure SMU has more than enough money to take care of it. 07-coffee3

Because I like you I will tell our AD to turn down a meeting

As another Cal fan said on Twitter recently, "All I want for Christmas is for someone else to hire Sonny Dykes."
Tom Herman said all these rumors about LSU and Texas are false, and that he is happy at Houston. The way LSU and Texas treated their coaches lately? I would not be surprise nobody wants those jobs.

Coaches are always happy, until they blow their old school a goodbye kiss on the way out the door.

I wonder if Herman knows something where Houston going be instead of the AAC in the future? Could another P5 conference be calling for them to join instead of the Big 12? Big 12 snoozing again and lose any schools that they should have gotten.
The difference between this years coaching search and last years is amazing. They seem to be completely opposite. Last year went off the rails early in the season. This year doesn't seem to be to crazy. Granted we shall see what happens after today/tomorrow when the regular season is officially over. It seems like there will probably not be to much movement and most of it that does happen will not be P5. That would seem to be good news for the G5 schools that have coaches that might have been poached. Herman seems likely headed to Texas (if that doesn't happen that would be shocking). Fleck at WMU, would he rather stay at WMU than get a payday and go to Purdue? He can probably pick his spot. Also, what about Les Miles? Does he get a shot somewhere? Does he want any of the available jobs.
ESPN is saying that Butch Jones at Tennessee could be out. People are not happy with an 8-4 record.

UH is not going anywhere any time soon. AAC will not get raided for at least 3 years.

In a related move:

In Liberty's announcement [of the hiring of former Baylor AD Ian McCaw], President Jerry Falwell said, "Ian's success really speaks for itself. You look at what Baylor was able to do during his tenure, it fits perfectly with where we see our sports programs going."

That may be true, but I don't believe I would have said it if I were Falwell.

Are they gonna sweep rape charges against players under the rug now as well?

Just stop. Not many are happy to hear of the Ian McCaw hire at Liberty. He was brought in to help move up to FBS so put that in your posts.

Also, Liberty kicked a pair of football players off the team earlier this year for alleged sexual assault before they were convicted by the law (the charges were dropped I think). One of those players transferred to South Carolina.

If you want, you can go ahead and listen to the ESPN Outside the Lines report on the hiring and situation. http://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/1816...id/3286128
