Unless he's bringing in a Cal type recruiting class for next year what the hell is he doing other than collecting a fat paycheck?

Is anybody happy with the lack of number of scholarship athletes on the team or the lack of number of quality players? Of course not.

But you've got to consider when he was hired at Memphis. He was hired after the early signing period. He had just a little over a month to convince any unsigned quality player to sign with Memphis during the regular signing period.

He had the whole summer to try to sign someone to fill up the roster limit but the chances of signing a quality player that can make some type of immediate impact wasn't really very good.

Besides, do you just want him to sign just anybody to fill the roster limit? We learned from Pastner that that may not be a wise thing to do especially if a special case like Jarnell Stokes happens.

I think Tubby Smith should at least have a full year of recruiting and see what kind of players he can really sign before criticizing his recruiting.

That is about 100% false.

Hoopdreams has shown time and again other schools pulled in players all through the summer to fill needs.

It was clear in April that Memphis needed more depth in the front court. There were quite a few available JUCO and grand transfers that were available.

Getting Chad was just a reaction to losing Marshall, even though most saw the writing on the wall with Nick back in April/May that he was boh.

This. There were players out there and our staff didn't get them.

I bet you a zillion dollars steve forbes would've been out there beating the bushes and scaring up some players, like he did at his previous job when they had no talent/depth when he came in

Sure they did. They lost to a lesser skilled team. Every one from coaches to analysts agree that pressure disrupted our O. WE SCORED 51 POINTS.

See my rephrase above.

If you're intent on laying that loss solely on the guards then we just won't agree.
That is fine, we do not have to agree. But lack of a primary ball handler is the main reason we lost. We had 17 turnovers and 11 only assists. We literally had 4 possessions in a row where we failed to get the ball past half court (is this football or basketball?).

Everything you describe is symptomatic of having players who can't handle the ball.

They got the ball past half court and would wait for the trap. Ya, because they are not comfortable dribbling. They would get the ball and dribble to the baseline. Ya, because they are not comfortable dribbling against pressure. They pick their dribble up in the worst spot. Ya, because they are not primary ball handlers who can handle defensive pressure.

It does not have to even be a PG necessarily. Just one guy who can dribble past halfcourt against pressure and then get the ball to the PG to start the offense.

Coaching
Not looking to start whatever is going on between you and Tubby's wife just genuine discussion.

I agree there were lots of questionable coaching decisions, especially with leaving the Lawsons out so long and never bringing Chad back in the final 8 minutes. However, you cannot just teach players to be comfortable handling the ball under pressure. You can work on it and do drills and so on but at these level a guy is most like either a primary ball handler or he is not. Teaching a player's mind to slow down, relax and do exactly what is done in practice with the ball in his hands is under pressure is pretty dang tough to teach, especially in a short period of time.

I guess...those same players looked better today against pressure.

And Dedric showed why you don't sit him for long.
Tubby can coach, gotta give the Dude a chance. He's playing with the players Josh didn't run off, gonna take some time to recruit his players. In the meantime the Dude is gonna do what he can do, when he can do it

Amazing how with a little coaching and a little more patience, these guards were able to break Iowa's pressure much easier than Providence's.

Even though we were being told after the loss by some posters that the guards were trash ballhandlers and we couldn't win with them.

I think Dedric's gotta touch the ball every offensive possession. Just not by bringing it down the floor! But we're going to be a below average team if he's on the bench.

I didn't see the Iowa game, but based on the score it doesn't seem like they played much zone (if any)? We struggled against Providence when they pressed, but I actually think we could have won that game (despite the turnovers) if we would have figured out their zone. It seemed like when they went zone, we just started passing the ball around the perimeter and chucking up bad shots. We gotta figure that out or it will happen again.

Johnny Zuppardo, 6-8, F, Jr., Mississippi State

Christian Jones, the 6-7 225 F grad transfer from St. John's (played HS ball in Texas), signed at the very last minute this summer also by a new coach in Marvin Menzies at UNLV (hired AFTER Tubby was hired), is averaging 14 and 7 through 6 games so far (UNLV is 4-2).

Guess that blows a lot of theories out of the water from there being no "impact" players left on the board to new coach not having time to establish relationships, etc...blah blah blah.

In summary...there were plenty of players on the board that could've made an impact that were not signed for various reasons - one cancelled a visit, two others the coaching staff made a decision against for two different reasons.

But when you just say, there weren't players on the board...you're being foolish.

It is what is though - this is the team they chose to roll with and who knows, maybe Azab gets eligible - though I bet he doesn't fit some posters' definition of the word "impact" as they were applying it to grad transfers.

Little early in the week for such a dramatic statement, no? I did not see anybody call them trash or say we could not win with them.

I saw many (me included) say we have no real primary ball handlers on this team and it would benefit greatly from that. I still stand by that. Martin could grow into that role but he is not there today nor is anybody else currently on the roster...
We'll sure...we'd benefit by having a 7 foot lottery pick who averages 20 and 10 too...but we don't HAVE to have that.

The team has always been flawed...you coach around it.

They did much better against Iowa because of two things: they broke the press with patience and Tubby played Dedric and KJ more minutes.

Pretty much it.

in the providence game, the officials would not make a call as martin was being hacked each time down the court

I bet you a zillion dollars steve forbes would've been out there beating the bushes and scaring up some players, like he did at his previous job when they had no talent/depth when he came in

Not saying forbes was the guy, but the lack of effort from this staff was noticeable and disheartening

Once again, what impact player could have been signed during the summer to help the lack of depth especially up front?
