In that game, they had some boxing trainer as the color guy (I suppose he's famous, but I don't follow boxing so who knows) and he didn't shut up the whole game, most just saying Kent needed to slow WMU down by hitting them below the belt.

Best part was that at one point, Desmond Howard referred to WMU as Western Kentucky. The other guys immediately called him out on it, but that turned on something and for the rest of the game they called WMU Western Kentucky about 20 more times. Hilarious.

10,100 attendance. Nobody in Chicago gives a crap about NIU. Lived there 20 years.

Haven't lived in Chicago but based on the media coverage, I agree. They're best off trying to get people from the suburbs to the games, especially if you insist on playing the biggest games of the season on a freakin Wednesday night. No one in Chicago is driving to DeKalb for a game, and for freaking sure not going there on a weeknight

Toledo has 3 good RBs it seems. NIU has 2, but Huff is better and hardly gets any carries. A good reason why lots of people want Carey gone.

Got a few more good RB's on the roster with Michael Warren coming in.

Yea, we have good RBs coming in too, I just wonder if our coach will play the best ones. :banged: Reports are good on Childers at QB, but our coach will probably play Graham even though his upside is limited to probably Division II level. The coach can't admit when he's wrong. Graham did run pretty well, but it's harder when the other team doesn't have to commit to stopping the passing game. If you're a QB and you have fewer turnovers, you start even if you suck. Bougnon will play because he doesn't turn the ball over, even if Huff is the better RB by far.
By the way, a little annoyed by face mask penalties that weren't face mask. In this game, NIU got caught for one where the helmet was hit but not the face mask. I think they need to only call it if the face mask was actually grabbed, not just when the head gets moved and assuming that it must have been a face mask.
We had one earlier in the year where the jersey was grabbed, the guys head bobbed down and we got the face mask call. No hand on the mask.

Yea they seem to go by what it looks like rather than what actually happened. I've seen that before.
As far as NIU I thought they were well coached in terms of technique, fundamentals and game planning. they made us look flat because they attacked our weaknesses well. If our future NFL DT isn't on the sideline wearing sweat pants they probably run outside more. They were better prepared than UT from a scheme and first 20 plays play calling standpoint. I can sorta see the frustration with some of the personnel decisions, but what is Carey gonna do? His best QB is out. his 2nd best QB is hurt and would have been playing at less than full strength. can't expect him to throw in some fourth string guy who has never played hoping he will surprise in a big game. I thought their biggest mistake was going away from Golliday in the red zone in the 2nd half. what's the point of having an athletic 6-4 receiver with a knack for acrobatic catches and going to your 5-8 guy on end zone throws?

our defense has lost some of its aggressiveness. they really showed it in the first half, but got some back in the second half. we really miss having LBs who fill the holes on the run. Both Taafe and Woodley are poor run stoppers. Last year was mostly Coleman and Murdock with a little Milligan, all guys who were natural run stoppers. Add to that a Dline which outside of a healthy Hester and some decent play from Stepec just doesn't get penetration. Last year we had a lot of linemen who could get in the backfield. That slowed down run plays and gave the LBs and DBs a chance to read the play more and be decisive. Lots of times this year our back 7 doesn't react until the play is on top of them, and once you get run over a few times it is tough to get your swagger back.

Announcers were OK, a little too much goofing off, but they were playing to the competition. Its a wednesday night MAC game in front of a mostly empty stadium with a 3-6 team hosting the perennial 2nd place Mac team. The whole playoff thing diverts attention away from enjoying good football and makes it all about which few teams are gonna play a couple big games. ESPN is making college football about spectacle, promotion and television and the conference and ADs have sold out their public universities' sports teams to the whims of ABC-Disney.
