I'm set on making the trip alone if need be but would be more fun of course to go with tiger fans though. I'm 27 and can drive us there, down to party on bourbon street all day Saturday after victory friday.
Take the train Thursday. You will be with Tiger fans then.
If you are female, you might get more replies

Locker room talk?
Ass, cash, or grass - nobody rides for free

Can you still bring a cooler and your own spirits?

If you have a sleeper car ticket, yes.

This was a blast back in the day.

I can drive. And the train tickets were way too much.

We're taking a cue from you guys & taking the train from ATL to New Orleans. I did the City of New Orleans years ago from Memphis to NO & Chicago but never the Southern Crescent from Atlanta (now the Crescent). We settled on the train versus driving (too many of us with bags for the car) or flying (have you flown, originating from ATL lately?). Hoping for a fun trip & most of all a big Tiger win!

Well, for senior citizens, the round-trip fare is $ 98 each (coach). Nobody needs a sleeping compartment between Memphis and N.O. , all travel is during waking hours each way. If you drive, parking is $30 per day in New Orleans. Add the cost of gas, and the train works out to be pretty cheap. Take a streetcar from the Amtrak station to Canal, and exit at Bourbon. Puts me right near my hotel. Streetcar fare is like 50 cents for seniors.

The train is the cheapest deal for me, plus you can take a cooler, walk around the train, visit the observation car, or eat in the dining car or snack bar. Arrive in N.O. rested and relaxed. The train has electric outlets at each seat to charge phones, etc. Seats recline. Legroom is huge, etc. I should do commercials for Amtrak.
I've warmed up to Amtrak too over the last few years. Instead of flying into LaGuardia from ATL for a BB game, I've flown to Philly & take the train from Philly directly from the airport, getting to Manhattan/Penn Station (next door to Madison Sq Garden) in about an hour with a lot less hassle than flying direct to NY then deal with getting into the city. You have to understand the Amtrak (or other train) processes but in this age of paying for legroom, bags etc. & security hassles, I like it.
Is there a smoking car still on the City of New Orleans???? I don't think I could go 8 hours without a ciggy.

ETA: Just checked it out. No Smoking anywhere, ever. They need to make the last car smoking.

There are some station stops where smokers can get off the train and light up.

They have like 5-6 stops that are smoking stops

man, I hope you got some PMs to take you up on your offer..... there seem to be a lot of people who want to de-rail your thread
It always seemed that the gas + parking in New Orleans offset/exceeded the costs of the train. Maybe that's changed, though.
