The Daily Dragon (I realize it's just a fan blog) picks the Monarch's to finish in eighth place in men's basketball in 2016-17. I love Freeman, but appearantly not as much as this guy. He really devalues the offensive ability of any players currently on the team.

I mean, I am not as positive on this team as some, but that is an incredible lack of knowledge or respect. I think we have top 3 talent, at least. To pick us 8th, you are putting us behind several really bad teams.
I'd bet $100 we finish in the top four, and I don't bet.
We have some question marks, but expecting us to have the best defense in the league, but finish 4th is awfully strange.
I read a CUSA power rankings article today, maybe Midmajor Madness, I don't remember where. It had UAB 1, ODU 4. Had Marshall at 3.

I think that was maybe the SB Nation power rankings. They came out today.
Man, ODU fans consider this arguably the deepest, most talented, and most well-balanced team in recent history (on paper at least), and it's only good for 8th place in a sh**y basketball conference?

We're replacing our two best offensive players by a large margin and an NBA player with baker, caver and a transfer.
It is by no means a lock that we are top 4 although not finishing top 8 seems silly.

He also picked Charlotte 9th, and I would be surprised if they aren't Top 4. The guy isn't as informed as I thought.
I don't expect many people outside the ODU circles to understand how good we are expected to be. Lots of incoming talent via Juco and redshirt freshmen that others wouldn't know unless they really looked into it.

The creator of this ranking certainly has a right to his opinions, but regarding ODU I do have to question his rational. As someone earlier said, it is odd to state that a team will likely have the top defense in the conference and then pick them eighth. That is a huge devaluation of the value of great defense.
I understand the part about not knowing where our perimeter scoring will come from, but his synopsis seems to suggest that we have almost no talent coming in to make up for Freeman's scoring, and I happen to believe he is dead wrong there.

Thats the thing - we are good on paper right now. None of us have seen the finished product.
Brandan Stith is going to have a monster year. It would not shock me if he averaged 15 and 12.

IMO, we should legitimately be among the top 3 or 4 in CUSA. The unknown is how our guards will play. I think scoring will be spread out among a larger variety of players during the entire season and each game will probably have a different hero, till we settle into a 2nd or even 3rd go to player(s). Brandon should be a much larger factor this year for our offensive production. I hope that BJ will eventually find his shooters touch and be the man for ODU's outside and mid range jumpers, we will need him to be a consistent scorer to be effective. If that falls into place it will give the team more weapons and we could be a team that is hard to match up with this year. The bigger question mark is if Alassane Kah and Trey Porter, if they are able to clog the middle and be effective on defense and contribute consistently with point production, if so......WATCH OUT.
If Zoran Talley and Denzell Taylor have as much improvement this year as they did the year before ODU potentially could be a very good team. We will go through some early season adjustments, but, overall I think this will be a good year for the Monarchs.
WoW you Monarch fans are a touchy bunch. You are a group of unkowens with your top player from last year gone. To me, you look good on paper but if you don't gel in game time situations who knows where you will end up. My guess is you are good enough for a 3-5 spot but if you have problems playing together at times then anything could happen.
