If the Big 12 falls apart does that allow the opportunity for a new East Coast conference?

Potential Conference
UConn
Army*
Temple
Navy*
West Virginia
Cincinnati
Dayton^
VCU^
East Carolina
Memphis
UCF
South Florida
Might put in Umass and Vermont. Old rivals of UConn. I could see some CAA schools come up as well. Let East Carolina, UCF, Tulane, Tulsa, Memphis form a southern conference with schools pulled from C-USA, Sun Belt and some top FCS brands.

Fordham and a couple of others from the Patriot might be interested if both Navy and Army become a full member as well with them.
Not sure what the Big 12 has to do with creating that conference. Beyond W Virginia, that conference could be built today if the individual schools are interested.

Vermont disbanded its football program in the 1970s.

...what?
No
Charlotte
East Carolina
Marshall
Massachusetts
Old Dominion
Southern Miss
Temple
UAB
UCF
USF
*Army (FB Only)
*Navy (FB Only)
The east coast all sports conference already exists in the CAA.

A new east coast FBS conference would forfeit all CFP and Big Dance payments so it can't happen unless the AAC and CUSA agreed to a reaalignment.

David, your homework assignment is to look up the athletic budgets of the schools that you propose and see if they could afford to compete on a similar level.

I understand that UConn used to be in the Yankee Conference and West Texas A&M used to be in the Border Conference and whatever else, but these historical tidbits have nothing to do with the current economic situations of any of these schools.

Think about this for a bit? Vermont with UMass., UConn., Stony Brook, Maine, New Hampshire, Army, Navy, Fordham, Temple, VCU, Old Dominion, James Madison, Towson, Marshall and some others could make it a better conference than what Vermont is in. Vermont does have a good men's basketball team that could fit in there as well. They could save money. That could mean that they could start spending more money with all that savings that way.

West Texas A&M for the person who mentioned me, would be better off in D1 with New Mexico State. They would be in the WAC right now if they stayed, but would be S.O.L right now as well. When UTRGV decides to add football? You get three schools to reform a WAC football conference. They might be great if they join the Big Sky.

Appalachian and East Carolina will be in the same conference within 10 years.

I don't think anybody is arguing that this wouldn't be a step up for Vermont, but why would UConn, Temple, or Marshall be interested?

Marshall might, but UConn, no way. This is even worse than the American.

If somebody wants to create a real northeastern league with UConn, Rutgers, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, BC, Maryland, Temple and Army and Navy for football only, ok, we could work with that.

"ECC" if one of the existing names didn't survive.

I'd like to see something similar to this. Would be a huge win to get UConn for their hoops as well (and UMass travel partner), though I realize that is unlikely. I might swap UMass and Army (who I don't think wants in a league) for WKU and MTSU. WKU is going to end up being very good at hoops for as long as they can hold onto Stansbury.

That sounds more like what some schools might want in the event that the Big XII adds BYU and Houston. Because if Houston is no longer involved, what's the point of having Tulsa, SMU and Tulane?
I tried to consider what might happen if Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas were all to leave the Big XII for either or both of the SEC and B1G. One scenario was that the remaining six teams would go big, inviting ten new members, with a western and an eastern division, looking like this:

West

TCU
Kansas State
Boise State
BYU
Baylor
Texas Tech
Houston
Iowa State

East

West Virginia
Cincinnati
Navy
Central Florida
East Carolina
South Florida
UConn
Memphis

This conference, IMO, could easily retain the Big XII's P5 status, despite lacking a true tentpole. What it would also do, IMO, is lead to doing away with the automatic G5 (which would now be G4) berth in the NY6. Virtually all the schools that would normally have been competing for that spot would now be in a P5.
ECU
Appalachian State
Old Dominion
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
UNC-Charlotte
Central Florida

This would be a viable league for sure, and P5 level, if the bottom of that list. Navy and Boise would need to be football only.

Aside from lacking the marquee name for a tentpole, this conference might be the bottom of the P5, but not by much. Over the last 10 years, those teams would have done about as well as the ACC and B1G have.

Since 2006, these teams have appeared in the Top 25 of the BCS/CFP ranking a total of 40 times (13 of the 16 at least once). They finished in the Top 10 a total of 14 times. Current ACC teams during the same period had 33 Top 25 and 8 Top 10 finishes, with 12 of 14 teams making the list at least once. The top ranked ACC team finished ahead of the top ranked B12 (this version) exactly half the time. So, all in all, they are pretty comparable.

And this league compares pretty well with the SEC and PAC in hoops as well. It would be a solid league. Lack of brand names would no doubt mean they would get less media money, but not so much as to cripple them, IMO.

Also, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the other P5's need a fifth power conference like this to provide enough P5 OOC opponents to satisfy their media partners' desire for quality inventory.

And a lot of ECU fans will be trying new things like running razor blades down their wrists; free diving from tall cliffs, buildings, and bridges; and seeing how long they can dangle from a noose before their bodies begin to decay.
