How many people did they ask?

If they asked 10 people total...and 2 said "yes" to that question, I'd say that the survey's is pretty much pointless. But hey it's good statistics for time. If they asked 50000, and found 10000 people, I'd say okay your article makes sense.

I seriously doubt that a full 20% of Trump supporters feel that way.
The Economist/YouGov Poll
Sample 2000 General Population Respondents
Conducted January 15 - 19, 2016
Margin of Error ±2.9%

So what's this have to do with Trump?

49. Do you approve or disapprove of the executive order which...
Freed all slaves in the states that were in rebellion against the federal government

Approve strongly 53%, Approve somewhat 17, Disapprove somewhat 8, Disapprove strongly 5, Not sure 17%

So the poll asked a question and Time made up a story.

Perhaps the folks who disagreed are actually the ones who truly appreciate whet the EP was and more importantly, what it was not. The EP was controversial as it did not "free the slaves."

Quote:In fact, it freed only slaves in parts of the Confederacy "in rebellion" — about 3.2 million of the nation's 4 million slaves. Because they were behind Confederate lines, there was no way to immediately enforce the order.

Emancipation did not apply to areas of the South not in rebellion (such as southern Louisiana) or to four slave-owning border states (Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri) that never seceded.

Therefore many people who opposed slavery were disappointed in its scope, as in fact, it did not free ALL the slaves.

And the Times story is truly disingenuous.
Great, we have yet another liberal crapping their pants. How many more days of this?
It's a deceptive question.

But, that's what we have resorted to in this world today.

Was freeing the slaves a bad thing? Morally? No. Was it a bad thing demographically/economically/politically? Yes, because of the way it was done.

How the slaves were freed is the number one reason we have an underclass in this country today.

That sounds harsh but then again people in the West seem to have lost the ability to deal with the harsh realities of this world.

The black community needs the opportunity to elevate themselves. But, the only person who can make you free is yourself. Our programs etc. do little to help those who need it the most.
Executive orders are a bad idea.

I'm not really going out on a limb here when I think "it's doubtful that those that disagreed did so because of a full and complete legal and historical understanding of the Emancipation Proclamations as it relates to this question."

There are real racists out there, coupled with stupid people who didn't understand the question, jamokes like me who have been known to purposely answer questions in ways opposite of my real thoughts, people that insist the Civil War was paramount about states rights, people not really pro-slavery but not too impressed with the domestic terrorism organization Black Lives Matter, people that click or say "disagree" to whatever the question is so they can finish giving their order at Burger King etc etc etc.

Nope not the onion. But after looking at the actual survey question , you may have proven they're on the same level.
The South has been fighting Terrorism since 1859 and John Brown at Harper's Ferry.

I absolutely agree with your post.

It was my response to the OP, and in particular the first sentence, which I considered at best naive and at worst maliciously misleading in a attempt to depict Trump supporters as racists.

Therefore, I concocted a plausible, albeit improbable, alternative interpretation that relied on historical facts.
It's Time. What do you expect.
