For those who subscribe to the theory "It's not the X's and O's, its the Jimmy's and Joe's."

I was looking at various metrics and this one is the quickest and easiest.

Sort by position or rating
Small screen users will have to reduce their browser size percentage or use the arrow keys.

Sometimes highly rated players don't pan out, and sometimes unrated players become stars.
While not all inclusive, and knowing that players develop at different rates and to different plateaus, this gives us a somewhat of an idea where we are and where we will be.

QB and OL seems to be of continuing concern for us. Our only 3 star O Lineman is a converted DT, Casey Cullen. Does he even play?

Random observations;
App State is very similar to us, http://247sports.com/Team/Appalachian-St...350/Roster
UTSA is pulling away.http://247sports.com/Team/Texas-San-Antonio-Roadrunners-Football-291/Roster
Georgia State is pulling away and has three 3 star QBs on their roster. http://247sports.com/Team/Georgia-State-...288/Roster
Comparing us and NC State completely explains the dichotomy of the game scores
and programs. http://247sports.com/Team/NC-State-17/Roster

Here's where I think our roster is still catching up from the transition:

ODU: 13 Srs, 18 Jrs
UTSA: 22 Srs, 33 Jrs.
App State: 18 Srs, 18 Jrs
Georgia State: 23 Srs, 34 Jrs
NC State: 5 Grads, 7 Srs, 25 Jrs
Cullen Casey plays left guard. He splits time. He is a converted defensive tackle.
Another metric that might be interesting to know is how many starters and subs came to the program as walk-ons. It would be interesting to know how our opponents look in this area. Are we playing an unusually high number of walk-ons, and if so, what does this say about the quality of our recruits?

That is the biggest difference, imo. I was reading up on NC State and they were discussing the jumps in the weight room. The DL were talking about benching 50 more pounds from the previous year and squatting close to 100 more. (I think, I know it was ridiculously high).

Right now, we have 13 guys that have been through a full cycle to get bigger and stronger. I mean, look at Coward now. Its one thing to have 3 star recruits, but if they are freshman and soph, they typically aren't up to par with junior and seniors; even if lower recruited guys.

I agree that the numbers are telling, but I am not sure I understand the transition argument. App, Ga St, ODU and UTSA all transitioned at the same time.
We are 3 years in to FBS recruiting and have 2 more seasons until we have a full roster.
The future is bright.

UTSA was recruiting FBS from Day 1. App State is basically where we are (although, I still maintain their history had allowed for them to make the transition faster).

Despite last year's bowl appearance for them, I still think Georgia State is behind us.

Wilder choose to build long term and try to balance out the recruiting classes as much as he could as opposed to taking a bunch of transfers and grads. He wanted to try to set up for roster balance through redshirting some and playing some right out of the gate. Its why he unusually redshirted a couple of sophmores that played as true freshman. Now, we could have way too many seniors in two years, but it would also mean most of the guys playing would have at least been in the system a year before stepping on the field.

We also made a effort to start the more talented young players even if they were smaller and the older players transferred.

We are 4 years into FBS recruiting. We held off transitioning in order to try to get an FCS NC.

We have 55 Freshmen listed, and nine are rated (13%). Seven are two star recruits and two are 3 star recruits.
By contrast Georgia State has 34 Freshmen, eighteen of whom are rated (53%). Additionally, six of those are rated 3 stars.

That is horrific.

I would call the 2017 class the 4th FBS recruiting class. We were recruiting through the summer of 2012 as an FCS school. We weren't even telling guys about the possibility of moving up because it came from nowhere.

That is not true. The official announcement was made May 17, 2012.

Did you put that into a spreadsheet? How many are RS vs not?

It is a mistake on the spreadsheet. Several of those guys were rated based on 247 sports (but not on the spreadsheet despite that being the source)

Bernard- 3 star
Ellison- 3 star
Garner- 3 star
MCCluney- 3 star
Weaver- 3 star
Lackman- 3 star

Then several guys that were 2 star.

Yeah, you can't switch recruiting in the summer from FCS to FBS and pick up FBS guys you haven't offered or even looked at yet. Most guys you are looking at when they are in 10th grade and in their homes for 3 years.

Even so the percentage is still much lower than that of GaSt, and that assumes there are no mistakes on their spreadsheet.
Remember that BW fired a couple of coaches recently. It is rumored that the reason was because of recruiting. That might explain some of our problems. So, yeah, we may be a bit behind schedule.

For accuracy sake, we have 33 rated outside of the 55 freshman listed.
But, be fair, we have 10 3* sophomores. Georgia State has 5.

Believe it or not, recruits will look at the rosters. Many 3* guys don't want to be one year behind a 3* guy at the same position.

Also, let me be clear, until we get a 4* guy, I don't care what the rankings say. If the coaches can't tell the difference between a "2 star" guy and a "not ranked" guy, I highly doubt the website scouts can.
