As expected Ty Groce was added and Jalen Brown a frosh guard (walk on)

Good to have that info out on the EMU website.

As appears to be the case with more and more (?) schools, they announce a player after he has enrolled in school.

For many that would be say July. For others it might be September.

Groce started school last week (per his Twitter account) and EMU makes it public this week...

BTW, I count 16 on the roster with 4 of them sitouts (I assume Groce is a sitout).
Steve,

You have me salivating over basketball and I can't wait for the season to start. I get disappointed when I check this forum and I do not see a basketball update. One of us will have to make it to the gym to provide an update on individual work outs and scrimmages.

Why do you assume Ty Groce is ineligible this season? From what I understand, he never played for a D1 college. I love that he is a local kid.

Here's to looking forward to a 24+ win season.

Piecing together what I have been able to determine from the Internet.

It appears that he started college and those summer drills at Northeastern. I assume his college course, etc. was paid by NU athletics.

That is enough to make him a transfer player.

This is completely different than say Blake Brown who apparently went to school at UNLV never got an athletic scholarship, etc. etc. (Didn't really check, but I doubt Brown was even on the UNLV team, etc.).

As far as practices are concerned, I believe practices start in earnest for D-I schools in less than two weeks.

We say that every year and...it never quite lives up to expectations. I do not see how this team doesn't win the MAC if Thompson improves even a little bit. How does he not dominate? That said, I gotta see it first.

Bob, you are right in that coach Murphy still needs to prove if he can be a championship coach. All of you know how I feel about playing zone exclusively and to reiterate I do not agree with that strategy. However, this is a new season and I am going to be optimistic. I agree with you that usually Coach Murphy has top tier talent in this conference. This year I believe we have the big Three: Thompson, Lee, Bond. I give Coach Murphy all the credit for putting together an exciting roster, don't you?

I will take Coach Murphy over all of our previous coaches down to Braun. I have to admit, we are more than competitive on our home floor which was not always the case . Isn't it better watching Ray Lee than Boone's Ricky Cottril who shot 50 times per game to get 10pts.

Let's rally behind the Mens team and see if we can witness a MAC championship.

Go EMU!

Bob, you have committed the classic sin of "everyone says, everyone said" (painting with too wide a brush) when in fact that isn't always the case.

I believe I posted Murphy's comments in the Blue Ribbon Yearbook last year in his comments about last year.

I will quote his entire sentence. It is COMPLETELY contrary to what you posted about 'we say that every year..."

This is an actual quote (pg. 240). It was published in Oct. 2015. This wasn't some post hoc, after the fact baloney.

Murphy literally made a prediction for 2015/16 AND 2016/17.

"This year, I don't know how good we'll be," Murphy said. "After this year, we'll take off and go where we need to be."

I should mention that I (and I believe Eagle Sam) both were very, very well of this statement when we posted before the start of last season.

Murphy was well aware of JT4 as well as his sitouts for this season.

When the yearbook comes out next month, Murphy again will know about his returning players for 2017/18 and also his sitouts.

He can again speak of his current and future teams.
I was late to the party on JT4 last year, I had no idea he was THAT good until the first time I saw him play. It was pretty apparent that he was a power 5 talent who fell to EMU. I'm just saying that with one year under his belt, I cannot see any way he doesn't dominate the MAC. Combine him with Lee-another major conference talent and the newcomers and this SHOULD be the year and I don't really need to see the other teams. It shouldn't matter. But I have to see them do it because like everyone here, I don't want to be burned by disappointment.
Bob, I don't think folks were drinking kool-aid last year.

I believe almost everyone knew that this team had a really short bench and had to rely on walk-ons for playable depth. He knew foul trouble (or injuries) would sink the team (or the particular game).

This year is 180 degrees different. Everyone realizes that this team is very deep.

Yes I agree, now they just have to do it.

Go EMU!

Two things ... first, Cottril was way better than given credit for ... probably Boone's best recruit that he threw under the bus trying to save his job (Jaquan Hart???)

Second ... winning the league is much more than just having the best talent, and much tougher too ... I'd put more stock in the Hurons winning the tournament than winning the league ... look at Buffalo, almost any recent MAC team ... won the tournament before they won the league ... in fact. I don't think Ohio has won the league since Gary Trent, but certainly have fared will in the tournament.
