. . . no time left on the clock. 51 yard pass lateral play for a TD stunned the Cowboys. OSU ran a 4th down pass play with four seconds on the clock. All the Cowboy offensive players were kept while the QB threw the ball down field out of bounds from the pocket. Intentional grounding was called. CMU ball at their 49 with 00:00 on the clock. Epic game.
Wow. Huge coaching mistake there. Great win for CMU and the MAC!
Game will probably be protested. Refs did not rule the penalty correctly and CMU should not have been given the ball for the untimed play. Game was over with that throw ruled as grounding. Cannot end the game that way (with an offensive penalty that involves loss of down) That stuff only happens to us anyway.

However--even if protested I do not think the game result can be overturned?

Would be interesting to know if even just one member of the officiating crew was trying to tell the others that the rules call for the game to be over...

Even so, stupid play call. I get not punting--bad things could have happened there, too. But with only 4 seconds left and you have 50 yards you can run backwards in to kill the time.

And it shouldn't take away from a nice game by the Chips on the road against a ranked team.

The officials, IMO, had three terrible calls in the fourth quarter. A defensive pass interference call against the Chips which should have been an offensive PI or a no call. An offensive holding call on the Cowboys on a TD run that was waved off and the flag picked up. Finally, a bad spot from what should have been a first and goal from the one was spotted on the two making it fourth down for OSU.

The big question is based on the ruling that an offensive penalty with no time on the clock cannot extend play. Not what the officials on the field decided. CMU snap was with 00:00 on the clock extending the game.

This will the topic of discussion all week.

Running backwards even if a safety is called runs off the four seconds.

Yep. Okla State probably didn't want to have their yardage total reduced by 50 yards--so they get a loss instead.

It cannot extend the game if the offensive penalty results in a loss of down. This is one that I would think could be protested because the decision would have ended the game. Since it was an incorrect decision by the referees, I would think a protest could hold up and overturn the game - especially since it would give the P5 a win. Don't know why Okla State ran that play to run the clock out without knowing the rules. They could have argued it and then announced it would be played under protest for the untimed down. I knew about the rule from a high school game that hit the papers up here. The losing team protested and won the protest.
I don't think you can protest a college game. The game is over.

That's my understanding too. I've been around for a while 03-old and don't remember a college game being protested. And if you could do that, the Rockets would have protested the Syracuse game from a few years ago. I seem to remember the Rockets asking Syracuse to vacate the win (vacate might not be the right word, but it's all I've got) but that's not the same thing.
Yeah, they can't overturn this result anymore than they could overturn the result of our game at Syracuse, but I guess it's good to know that if we ever need to run out the clock on fourth down, all we have to do is intentionally ground the ball and the game will be over. What a dumb rule. Don't feel even remotely sorry for the other OSU though. You got a middle-of-the-road MAC team comin' into your place and you let it come down to that? Good riddance to them!

Mistake or not but if Candle pulled that crap while trying to run out the clock, I'd grab my pitchfork, gas can, and lighter and start a riot until O'Brien removed him from his HC position. Holy crap was that the dumbest decision I've seen on a football field...

Sorry Sorry...you may be right. 04-bow
I think what the UConn coach just did is in the running for dumbest decision of the day. 2nd and goal at the 1 with 17 seconds left & 1 timeout. Doesn't get the play in, so has to burn the TO. Then runs the ball and gets stopped and the clock runs out. Lose by 4.

Still, me thinks UConn is not nearly the patsy some people seem to think. Taking Navy to the wire, at Navy. UT better bring their A game tonight and not be taking Maine lightly.

Sounds like you want CMU to get that loss.

They already came out and said it won't be overturned. Honestly, that officiating crew was terrible all around. OSU stepped out of bounds on their first TD and it wasn't reviewed. They picked up a flag on a clear hold that resulted in a TD. And above all, they got bit in the ass for playing like wimps at the end. Punt the ball or run backwards. Nobody was even aware of that rule which is exactly why they didn't protest until experts came out after the game and stated so.

Lions-Seahawks had a scenario like that last year with the batted ball rule. Refs botched it and the Lions would have won. Oh well.

crawl back home. Everyone here is glad for a MAC win but we're not afraid to look at the situation objectively.
