Quote:A longtime policy of an Arkansas high school has sparked a social media frenzy of sorts after a Facebook post was made reminding parents of the rule.

Officials at Catholic High School for Boys in Little Rock shared via email with parents days before school began this year that, among other reminders, its “problem-solving” policy is written out in a new sign on the school’s office door.

“Allowing a boy to problem solve is really teaching them how to deal with their future in a very positive way,” said Catholic High School principal, Steve Straessle.

Straessle said the rule for parents has actually been in effect for years, but this is the first time a sign has been posted.

“I thought I would put up a sign just as a reminder to the parents, but more importantly as an explanation for why we do it.”

Since it hit Facebook last Wednesday afternoon, more than 3,600 Facebook users have shared their thoughts on the policy. More than 69,000 users have “liked” the post, while more than 117,000 have shared it.

One user commented, “As long as they don’t fail or go hungry, I am happy to know my kid is learning to manage the worst case scenarios in life.”

While another simply said, “Cruelty…”

In the email to parents, school officials said, “Our old philosophy was that doing so perpetuates forgetfulness and inconveniences adults for a boy’s memory lapse.”
