How screwed up is NASCAR these days? Consider this. In 1967 Richard Petty won 27 of the 49 races ran, including 10 in a row. IF the current points system was in place in 1967 Petty would not have been Champion that year. By winning the final 2 races Bobby Allison would have been the Champion. The most dominating season in the sport's history would not be enough to win the title.
And the Indy track this year

The Indy guys sold all the tickets

NASCAR had about 20% attendance

Well you are talking about the 100th running of the 500. By far the oldest race in the world. So you had record attendance.
NASCAR peaked, I'm afraid, with Rickey Bobby and Baby Jesus. I still watch nearly every race, and I still miss it on the weekends they don't race.

In My Opinion,
They have too long of a season/too many races. Go to about 20 races.
The Chase system is asinine, I agree.
Their Stars were overexposed several years ago with advertising.
And many of those overexposed stars aren't THAT good at pitching products.
The Infinity and Trucks series are just about as entertaining to watch.
Take off the restrictor plates. Much of the thrill of watching NASCAR was the inherent danger.
If that's morbid, so be it.
The race has become over-civilized, if that makes sense.
The teams are all SO GOOD these days. Reminds me of college football.
Still beats sleeping through televised baseball or golf.
That's all.

Big money has damage the series. The new franchise deal is not helping either. Series had to cur field from 43 to 40 and still has had short fields many weeks. Sponsors would rather pay $10 million to be an associate sponsor on a top team than be a primary sponsor on a non franchise team. Saw the same thing with the introduction of the top 35 rule.

36 is decent number of races. A lot better than the early years of two races a week on some weeks.

Attendance is down from the peek years. But still the most attended racing series in the world.

By far the best TV numbers in the US. And has long coat tails. NASCAR and IndyCar are both on NBCSN this time of year. The live Indy Car races on CNBC head to head against NASCAR does not draw .2 in ratings. But the delayed showing right after the NASCAR races bring them into the .5 and .6 range.
I like to ponder what it's like to be with Sam
Points system sucks.

Completely agree the talent is too bland, personalities of cardboard.

I can count on one hand the tracks that need two races a year. Not sure too many is the problem but lack of diversity. Newer racetracks over built capacity wise, cookie cutter in nature. Kansas is about as generic a track can be.

I'd rather see heat races than qualifing. Introduce heats at about a lenght for one green flag pit stop in order to finish. Seed feature with times off the heats and with a reduced field and shorter length, about two green flag pits to finish. Make it two day affairs.

Have the b series and trucks together at different tracks except for the majors. If the big boys are in Vegas, have the trucks and b teams over east. If they are at Watkins Glens, have the others in Memphis. So on and so forth.
Nascar needs a Tiger Woods type figure to breath life back into it. Golf was dead before Tiger saved it

I'm not into NASCAR and I've heard of Junior. Jeff. Tony.

The problem is the 90-00s were for NASCAR what the 70-80s were for tennis.

Guess you have not heard of Darrell Wallace Jr. Top 10 in Xfinity points. Drives for Roush 19 starts this year 6 top 10's and 3 top 5s.

well if he hasn't heard of him, that indicates his point stands.

Being dominant does no good if your popularity doesn't capture the interest of casual and non-fans.
Wallace isn't dominant either.

He's a good young talent and he'll drive in Cup soon but he has yet to show anything that would make him like Kyle Busch or Johnson or any other driver that you could consider 'Tiger'-like.

How about one of the following:

Wendall Scott first black man to win in the top series in NASCAR. Two others won in lower series before Scott win in the top level.

Willie T Ribbs First black man to run Trans Am and Indy Car(car sponsored by Bill Cosby). Drove a few races in NASCAR.

Bill Lester first black man to win in Grand Am series. Graduate of UC Berkley

Otis Lester locally self proclaimed Fastest Black man on dirt.

Tiger Woods wasn't the first black or Asian in the PGA.

Not by a long shot. But the earlier ones were more like the era, quiet. Not flamboyant in nature. Lee Elder and Calvin Pete were seen as just another golfer by a lot of the golfing public. And they were no where near the first. Self promotion and such just was not done in those days by anyone. It was still considered a gentleman's game.

For the record I wasn't referring to race when I brought up Tiger and golf. I was just saying that Nascar needs a transcendent star that can get the intestest of a person who doesn't care about Nascar.

I never cared for golf but when Tiger was at the top of the leaderboard I paid attention as a sports fan

Same here. In his prime, there was a chance you'd see something truly amazing when you watched Tiger play.

They have someone in the rolling road block of PMS Danica. Do you actually think she would still be in that ride based on her productivity if it were not for her being a non male driver.

The worst thing that the series can do is to give another ride to someone who has not earned it through ability and production.

There is a Hispanic driver running Sprint Cup in Aric Almirola. Parents from Cuba.

Motorsports is no different from any other major sport. If you are not active in the sport before you are 8-9 years old you are not going to make it to the top of the series. You have to be at least into Karts while you are midway through elementary school.

There just not that many minorities in grass roots racing today to see many who have the chance to make it through the ladder system to NASCAR or Indy Car.

In baseball or football or basketball their shoes may be the highest expense when getting your kid started. Even in Karts you will end up spending several thousand dollars even at the entry level. Hard to do unless you have family who are willing to do without and go into debt in order to make your dream come true.
