Reggie Bell Jr is now departed which means there is no longer a QB controversy going into this season. Brogan Roback at 6'3 206 and a redshirt junior is returning as the starting QB. One of the highest ranked football recruits ever to choose EMU Brogan hit 61% of his passes last year for 2,304 yards with 16 TDs and 11 interceptions. His average per pass was only 6.7 yards. Hopefully Brogan lowers the interceptions this year, not sure what to make about the 6.7 yards is it the lack of WRs who can stretch the defense or lack of time to complete longer passes?

Todd Porter at 6'3, 205 also a junior who started his career at Western Kentucky before transferring to Garden City CC opened some eyes during the spring game. Has better than average running skills and moved the offense. He appears to be a favorite to get in the game first if Brogan falters.

James Pensyl at 6'6, 237 is a more classic drop back pocket QB and a redshirt frosh. Played a very small series of downs during the spring game so not sure what he can do. Don't know if we will see him this season.

Isaac Striebeling at 6'4,202 and a true frosh had an outstanding high school career at Fort Wayne Snider and is a duel threat QB. Comes in as the highest ranked recruit by 247 sports in the 2016 recruiting class. Appears to be a solid player. Likely redshirt this season.

Anton Skupin is a 6'5, 210 QB and a redshirt frosh and appears to be a walk-on.
Best be recruiting a second QB in the current class, looking at that list.
Just some quick thoughts...
Seems like both English and Creighton believed that a QB who could move was the answer to get the offense going. English picked Gillett and stuck with him until part way through his Senior year when the O-Line was improved and Benz was throwing a better ball.
Creighton seemed to like Bell over Roback.
It will be really interesting to see how things go from here.
I'm hoping Roback can show why (at least one) scouting service thought so highly of him.
We already have one pro style QB Preston Hutchinson in the 2017 class, but I'm thinking we may take another QB in this class. I like Striebeling who was offered by Ball State and Ohio U. I think he's more of a Andy Schmitt type QB with the same leadership skills. And Andy wasn't highly recruited either out high school in St John's MI only EMU and CMU offered him.

I really liked Andy Schmitt! If we could get another QB like him and they can stay healthy... I'd be very happy.
Dear Friends,
Roback is also fairly mobile. Not saying he can run like a Reggie Bell, but he can ramble if necessary, and maybe the coaching staff is working on his mobility skills to cut down interceptions. Just some thoughts.
Roback starts and is a known quantity.

My assumption is that Todd Porter is the backup.

Streibling likely a redshirt if Roback and Porter do their jobs.

Not sure Pennsyl fits in the mix at QB. Is he also a kicker?
Roback needs to cut down on silly interceptions and make a few more plays - this puts him on the top tier of MAC QBs for this year and next.

If we don't get improved QB play this season will be like all the others - struggling for 2-3 wins. We should be competitive in all but one or two games this year with realistic chances to win. That takes a mature and mostly mistake free QB - and some WRs to step up to a D1 level.

The Juco transfer has some decent film, but here's hoping he's not needed this year. Same with Pensyl.

Think you are thinking of Alsobrooks, who was a QB/K out of high school.

Yep. Is Pennsyl being considered for another position, e.g., TE?

Isn't that what is done with big QBs who who need another position...

Not a bad idea except we already have 3 sophomore TEs (we had four before Annee left).

I'm not sure Pennsyl is a QB who will be in the 2-deeps at that position.

Roback does need to improve his decision making but it's really hard to gauge any QB when the EMU defense is so horrendous. Being down by 21 pts in the 2nd qtr most of the time really shortens the playbook.

TE, not a chance.

His lack of reps in the Spring game about said it all.

Roback is out of excuses. The defense will be much better so that one will be gone as well. If he's a 50% passer with equal Int's as TD's after the first 4 games, he's replaced by the Juco if I'm the coach.
