Yesterday Clayton Allen, who just left Akron after his junior year, won the Olympic trials (and national championship) in the 800 meters.
Clayton Murphy- ran from behind the whole way also Wottle's Olympic run.

Thanks for the correction. Can't keep his name straight.

Interestingly, I saw the splits in the race, and Murphy's last 200 was his slowest (barely), but everyone else slowed down more.

Got a PR and is still only 16 in the world. Sad commentary on our middle distance people.

We may do fairly well at the longer distance races in Rio - meaning we have a chance to win a couple of medals between the men and women's teams including the steeplechase (I guess I consider that to be long distance running)

Our best chance in the 1,500 is to have a roller derby style pile up from all the pushing and elbowing that goes on, then come from the back of the pack to eek out a medal. I don't like watching the mile run anymore because of all the BS that goes on with teammates blocking runners in and then working together to force them to run on the outside lanes. Part of the strategy of running those races I suppose, but does not seem to be exhibiting sportsmanship. I'm also surprised there aren't more fist fights after those races are over.

Fist fights? They weigh 125 pounds. Boxers get in fist fights. That's why they're boxers. Distance guys run away. That's why they're distance guys.

It would be 125 vs. 130 pounders - so it would be competitive from that standpoint. Strange thing is - they don't even go over and have words with the guys that were pushing and elbowing during the run. Maybe that is just normal - and somewhat expected.
Although this has nothing to do with the MAC or Toledo runners, the Olympic trials is showing there are signs of some very good talent coming up through the ranks in track and field.

Two 18 year olds won the semi-finals in the 200 meters. I believe the finals are today (July 9). If not for a slight headwind, they both could have reset the American record for HS runners (even though they just graduated HS).

In the 1,500 - a 16 year old high school girl made it to the finals. She placed 10th and had a time of around 4:25 - about 10 seconds off the winning time (from memory). She beat the qualifier from Michigan rather easily.

Former all-Pro QB Randall Cunningham saw his daughter win a spot on the Olympic team in the high jump at just 18 years old. His son, Randall Jr., also competed in the high jump after winning the NCAA title as a sophomore at USC did not clear the opening height. He and 11 others failed to clear the opening height of 7'1/4 inches while trying to jump in a downpour. Not sure why they didn't delay this event (along with the hurdles) when it was raining that hard. Seems like they ran a chance of injury competing in the rain like that. Never was on a track team, so I have no idea how common it is to compete in the rain. Same conditions for everyone, but our top female hurdler did not make the team - and I would think the weather was a factor.

Merritt looks good in the 200 - qualifying for the finals in 19.74 and also won the 400 Trials final. Has a good shot at beating Bolt who has a hamstring injury and did not finish in the Jamaican Trials - but was awarded a conditional spot on the Jamaican team assuming he can demonstrate he is physically fit to take the track before the games commence.

I love watching the Olympics - but a lot of the televised sports have changed over the years. Rarely see boxing anymore

Couldn't believe they jumped in the rain. Kynard will jump on Sunday and should win. They even ran the steeplechase in the rain meaning those women had to jump over hurdles into slippery water. Doesn't seem fair.
...and a sixteen year old makes the Olympic team in the women's 400 meter hurdles. Probably has a future in modeling as well....

that along with the winner of the 1,500 meters for men being 41 year old Bernard Lagat who made his fifth Olympic team. Speaking of which, the USA took 2nd and 4th in the 2012 Olympics in the 1,500 meters for men. Would have never thought that was possible. The guy who took the silver in 2012 finished 4th at the Trials and did not make the team this year.

How can you not love track and field in an Olympic year?
Eric Kynard of Rogers wins the HJ.
2008-9 was a pretty amazing time around here. Napoleon's Fleck had cleared near 7'2", Roger's Kynard was over 7' and Sylvania Southview's Joplin was pushing it. Fleck went on to become a college All-American, I always wondered why Joplin didn't go that route. Still worked out good for him in football.

Fleck was runner-up for NCAA title (I thought he won but he didn't although he placed second and fourth in the NCAAs)at Auburn and was undefeated, IIRC, in head-to-head competitions with the younger Kynard. Finished his career at OSU. Joplin cleared at least 6'10" and I've heard he jumped 6'11" but never saw any documentation of that. Unusual that three guys living within thirty miles of one another would all be getting those heights, esp in a not so densley populated area like here.
How high did the Patterson kid at UT go?
