Also, I've started downloading all my music in lossless FLAC format. If you have decent equipment, it sounds great compared to low-bitrate MP3s. High bitrate MP3s can sound pretty much just as good, though.

Anyone else listening to FLACs nowadays?

i avoid flac cuz i can't play it in the car. is there a way around that?

I play it from my phone, and use a 3.5mm (aux) cable to connect it to my car's aux input. Alternatively, Bluetooth or one of those short range FM radio transmitters would work too... but even the newest wireless options don't beat a cable that was invented as early as 1878.

Also, it's worth noting that a phone still needs a high quality DAC to really get the most out of high fidelity sound files.

I'm sure this all sounds ridiculous to most people though. :lmfao:

In my mind, it's Astral Weeks, and it ain't even close.

Some buddies of mine out this way founded a festival - Pickathon - a handful of years ago and it's still going strong. It's received some good national buzz, particularly because of their ability to attract artists just before they blow up (in recent years, bands like Avett Brothers, Alabama Shakes, Sturgill Simpson, Courtney Barnett), but they also pull in a legend or two (this year, that would have been Charles Bradley). I was finally able to fully participate last weekend, and I'll never miss it again. Some of my favorites:

Drive By-Truckers (American Band was my favorite album from 2016) -

Wolf People (Prog rock (?), really good. Clip from Pickathon - it'll give a taste of the vibe of the place)-

Mandolin Orange (sweet, sweet songwriters - playing Midpoint in Cincy) -

Tank and the Bangas (crazy ****, and crazy good):

Lucy Dacus (Only 21, she's going to hit it big):

Hiss Golden Messenger -

Charles Bradley (71 year old Screaming Eagle of Soul) - he was singing shirtless, in sequin pants at a stage in the woods at 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

van morrison is drenched in summer sun, but my favorite summer tune and it's only appropriate in late summer

I had never heard this song until I heard of his death. It's a great song. I like this recording from 1970's TV because it seems to be shot and recorded live, on the TV.

It's on a piece of land between Portland and Mt. Hood - really quite idyllic. Like many festies out this way, it certainly has a few elements of something like Burning Man, but it's small (5,000) and fully focused on music. I suspect the girl you ran into was on her way to the 40,000-or-so person week long Oregon Eclipse Fest in Central Oregon. It's basically a collaboration between 14 festivals from around the world, centered on arts and electronic dance music. Looks like something a younger version of me would have been all over.......

Haven't been here for a while...but love this thread and wanted to participate.

The Revivalists -- great southern alt rock, soul bluesy band. Lead singer is from Hamilton, OH. They headline a festival in Hamilton in September. Saw these guys live in Covington in April. Amazing.

Here they are with a child prodigy guitarist covering Forgot About Dre. Check these guys out.

The Night Game -- a bunch of top notch studio musicians who formed a band and their sound is an homage to 80's music. And done really, really well. These guys haven't released an album yet, but it's coming soon. Their live YouTube videos sound great.

And, of course, the hometown heroes....

My humble contributions. RIP Subflea. Hated reading that.

Ah hell...my as well add this.

Judging by all of the characters I've seen in town the last two nights and the folks I know going, yes would be the answer.

I almost never listen to Van Halen, but it was great to hear that. Van Halen, interestingly (embarrassingly, given that it was Van Hagar) is the only band I've ever slept out overnight to get tickets for. It was mostly at the cajoling of buddies, and the show - despite good seats - kinda blew. OU812 Tour - Riverfront Coliseum. I wish I could have seen them earlier - I loved their Van Halen and Van Halen II in particular.

I was huge into Van Halen during my high school days. The first five albums are hard rock classics in their own right but I preferred Fair Warning the best. 1984 is "meh" with some ok songs but it got a bit "keyboardy" for my tastes. After that I checked out once Hagar joined.
