Whenever I read something about the coming ACCN, I keep reading terms like, "taking advantage of new technologies" and "the ACCN will be a model for what new sports tv channels will be."

Well in this article from Sorts business daily, it talks about new technologies and what conference networks will be able to do on a streaming basis. It is what I imagine the ACCN would be like.
Notice what it says that Comcast will do for the upcoming summer Olympics:

"But Comcast will complement that coverage with a dizzying array of video streams and other video-on-demand programming. In addition to its 11 TV networks, it will have 40 simultaneous streams, and every event will streamed live to the big-screen TVs of its X1 user"
.

I'm thinking that the ACCN will have multiple games playing and let us choose which games that we want to watch, sort of like going to Netflix and choosing what program you want to watch. Not like the BIGN where you have to watch whatever is playing.

Notice this from ESPN. Seems like they found a new revenue stream with streaming technology:

"Sports networks have not stood still. They all stream their channels and are trying to figure out how to navigate social media. This point was underscored by Ryan Spoon, ESPN’s senior vice president of digital product, design and audience development, who referenced Game 6 of the Spurs-Thunder series May 12 — the game where the Thunder clinched the NBA playoff series. He said almost 500,000 people live-streamed that game rather than watch it on ESPN’s linear TV network."

SPORTS BUSINESS DAILY ARTICLE
I can see how they are going to stream it to their cable box. My cable company mediacom has also integrated the internet into their boxes. We can stream Netflix, YouTube, spotify and Pandora through our TiVo boxes
I don't think it's cable OR internet, I think it will be both.

I think it will be both but I don't think we will have a full 24-7 network. I think one of the secondary ESPN channels (ESPN ESPNNEWS ESPNClassic) will become the ACC network on game days with a few other ACC related progams. Then the channel would revert back to regular programming on non game times.
This would allow the existing channel to charge more in ACC territories and may help increase the distribution in other markets.

Again this would be in addition to a ESPN3 type network (that is included with cable subscription) that could be purchased alacarte for those who are cord cutters.
I think we still see bars, restaurants, airports all showing the old cable channels while streaming loses that audience.

Also, ESPN won't likely add any ACC talking heads like it added dozens of SEC talking heads with SEC network.

I get the future is streaming.....but the ACC is looking at secondary status in exposure (not even addressing how SEC is protected status and always having it's brand pushed on ESPN).

Plus, I just don't' see the fan bases in the ACc buying many subs. Just too many tiny, not very interested fan bases to make the money add up.

In the 90's I worked part-time for a satellite installation company. We installed the big black c band / k band systems. We also installed Dish Network systems. The majority of our customers were bars and restaurants. Not as many have cable as you would think. Now days most have Direct TV.

As for The ACC Network, I don't see it as competition for The SEC Network. I believe ESPN will see it as something that compliments its other channels.

I just don't want to see The ACC stop at a broadcast network. I want to see our conference go to market with a multimedia package. Something that can change and grow with technology and the market.
Exciting times...

What a surprise. The Florida State fan only sees gray clouds. I'm shocked.

I think the negativity is based on a very deep inferiority complex. No amount of money is sufficient. No amount of titles are sufficient. At every juncture there is something looming in the future that is going to hold them back. Their competition is not who they chose to associate with on a regular basis, but who they associate with on special occasions.

It's akin to a neighbor on your street who thinks they are too good for the neighborhood, but they don't have the pedigree or the money to move up, despite having the best house and car in the neighborhood. Nothing will satisfy because they are not happy with themselves.

In this particular case with Florida State, I think the real issue is that some of their alums and fans have a real problem with alums and fans of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida rubbing their nose in the socioeconomic status dirt. Rather than be happy with what they have built, they are fixated on something they have no ability to capture - they will never be the original university in their state and it's damn difficult to catch up to the power an influence of a rival university that has a 100 year head start influencing people in the state.

The case with Clemson is even more acute because South Carolina has NEVER been Clemson's near equal in football. A massive rift in the North American Plate under Clemson would have to open up and swallow that end of South Carolina for the Gamecocks to put a championship team on the field and yet we hear a constant ***** and moan that the conference holds them back.

That level of insecurity means they can enjoy nothing because there is always the next fear. It reminds of rural people who endured the Great Depression living last 40-50-60-70 years of their life dreading the next Depression and putting up canned food in the basement so as not to starve.

More like unlike the athletic departments in Pittsburgh, Raleigh, etc. the ones in Clemson and Tallahassee want to compete for championships and know full well that the increasing conference revenue gap between the ACC and the conferences we compete with doesn't fit with those desires. We see how well the idea of simply being content with being mediocre has worked out for those schools and we want no part of it.
I think the key is access more than money. Some teams are just more efficient at maximizing their resources.

There's a lot of talk about cable and/or Internet, but I'm betting heavy on newspapers. Nobody will see it coming!

Don't give Greensboro any ideas. They already like to hang on to failed concepts out of a sense of loyalty, witness our insistence on propping up Raycom.

Too late!
Greensboro is also looking into a provision that would allow only alumni to be fans. It seems that the t-shirt variety complain a lot and do not have the intellectual capacity to understand the big picture.

Great! Perhaps they'll also look into the possibility of people actually attending games in the stadiums, and in particular, at bowl games?
I think the network will be both. I think they'll put it on the cable, and get it on there by offering a low carriage rate. But then I think it's also going to be offered as a standalone package, the first that ESPN offers without a cable subscription. Like HBO Now. The digital option will of course have tons of archived content and more than the live version. Possibly alternative games, as mentioned.

I don't see the ACC giving up easily on the exposure/credibility of an actually cable network, but it's clear at this point that there's going to be more.
Does anyone really think that an ACC Network is going to make the member schools any significant profits, whatever form it might (or might not) take?

At the risk of looking foolish, I'll go out on a limb now and say it brings in between $5 and $10 million per team, per year.

What is on basic cable won't matter because nobody will see that they are paying for the ACC network.
The biggest push back will be from long time fans in NC, VA and SC that have gotten to see ACC content forever FOR FREE.
Raycom/Jefferson-Pilot/CD Chesley might broadcast 5 basketball games a week and at least one football game. This was in addition to any other coverage (ESPN, ABC) that the conference might get. Now most of the Raycom broadcasts come over FOX SportsSouth.......still free with your cable subscription.
Having to pay for something you have never had to pay for before is going to be an adjustment.

X is correct, and while it's an adjustment folks in the three states will *****, moan, kvetch, bloviate, and pay the bill. If you don't live in the area, you have never seen people rush home and out of their driveway in time to see their favorite team pull an upset or watch who they hate lose a game they were favored to win. I'm sure transplants and carpetbaggers are not this way, but for those of us from here, it's as much of the culture as Barbeque war.
