This is just a casual discussion in case we need to expand in future, please don't go all rowdy on it.

Anyone with knowledge or engineering background know anything about expanding the TED? I would love to see a 10K TED and average ~8K rather than a 8K stadium averaging ~6 to 7K. If we move to bigger conference, some games will surely sell out 10K in my opinion. Its not possible to expand through the village side because of the practice facility, but is there a way it can be done? or maybe have a tilted roof and expand an upper deck on the Hampton Blvd side or maybe also have suites vertically up on the village side to counter balance? Any thoughts or ideas?

When it was built they said often it was not expandable. It has also been said in additional articles in the paper and elsewhere in the years since it was built. I am not an engineer so I have no idea from my own knowledge base but others on the message boards who said they were in-the-know have agreed there is very little that can be done to expand the TED. At least, not in any way that would make sense financially.
The claimed capacity is 9,100; not sure how many seats they could squeeze in their for a big game, if any.

Honestly, I don't think they need to expand or move to a bigger arena unless they manage to get a P5 invitation. If they moved to the AAC, the Ted would still be bigger than the arenas at Houston, SMU, Tulsa and East Carolina, and only about 300 seats smaller than Central Florida.

I do think they should try to do something with the Virginia Beach arena if that happens. Either a home-neutral game or a tournament.
Didn't the high cost study for the Ted determine that it was better to have a smaller stadium and that is the route we took? First idea was to have a huge stadium and all the evidence pointed against that. It probably still holds true.
You might be able to add a row or two at the top of the student section end to close off the open concourse there but that's about it.

9,100 includes floor seating so most likely only for a concert.

I sit corrected. 8,639 for hoops, 9,520 for concerts, according to the forever-infallable Wikipedia.

That said, even 8,639 is doable for the ACC, still bigger than SMU, Houston, Tulsa and East Carolina. If capacity could be tweaked upward a bit, it wouldn't hurt, but unlike football, I don't think we need a facility upgrade for ODU to hold its own in the AAC (or the A-10, even though that won't happen anyway).

Size of the TED is fine. Football needs to be 30K plus.

What about using the Va. Beach arena to try to attract bigger programs to come and play us? ACC and Big East programs for example. Does anyone think that could be done?

No. Maybe for a preseason tournament, but not for a home game. Let's consistently sell out the Ted over a long period before we talk expansion.

Why not? Use the new arena like Georgetown uses the Verizon Center. There are plenty of UNC fans and other ACC fans in this area. A neutral site like the new arena may attract these fans for future games. Or, even better, let's not even try, yeah...... that's the ticket.

Not the poster in question, but I presume the question was using the Beach arena for a home-neutral game against a team that wouldn't play at the Ted but might play at an NBA-class arena off-campus.

I don't think ODU would ever need a 16,000-seat arena on the regular. Even if the ACC came calling, they have three schools with capacities around or smaller than ODU's (Georgia Tech, Miami, Boston College) and another three in the 9,000s (Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Duke which is obviously a unique deal). I don't know that I'd call the Ted an ACC-quality arena, but it probably wouldn't be the worst in the conference and it wouldn't look out of place on ESPN broadcasts.
I still say no. You don't get but so many home games. It isn't our arena why they don't come here. It is certainly bigger and nicer than VCU and they play there.

Unfortunately we're not VCU. But that doesn't mean that we can't be forward thinking. This is a great recruiting area for basketball too, right? Why not use that and a new 18,000 seat arena to our advantage. Bobby Wilder thinks outside the box. Hopefully Jeff Jones will also.

VCU, with their inclusion into the A-10 and perennial top-25 ranking, not to mention always being in the NCAA tournament has passed us by. That is just a fact. Like it or not.

Yea no. If the ACC kids want to play in Hampton Roads they can come play us on Hampton Blvd. at The Ted. I will be happy to go see us in non-conference play come NCAA Tournament time in Virginia Beach.
Who was ODU's opponent on opening night of the TED?
It was the 'Heels. I was kidding around with Old Blue about something he wrote regarding a team up the road, but he's really correct. When ODU MBB raises it's profile we will get higher profile OOC home games.

Or even a preseason tournament where the games count as a neutral site.
