Sorry if this is old news, just saw this on twitter but these hats are AWESOME. I'm a Cubs fan but still always liked the 80s Sox logo. where can I get one of these hats or jerseys? This is exactly the kind of NIU gear I can get excited about.

I think they stated that they were not available for the public when they released them to the players awhile back.
I'm a huge sox fan, and while I love these, can someone explain to me the jersey anomaly.

The football team adheres to the NIU brand standards. The basketball had one season of following the brand standards and then went back to knocking off NBA jerseys... namely the Bulls and Houston Rockets. Same goes for the Baseball and Softball teams. They don't sport the NIU font, the Huskies word mark doesn't match anything and they do these jerseys (not complaining, just curious).

The volleyball and soccer teams seem to follow the NIU brand standard.

College baseball teams are rife with looks that don't fit in. Often for the best- South Carolina's hats, Tulane's Cardinals jerseys, Purdue's had a great Braves looking jersey. Often bad- every Adidas equipped team seems to end up with a tequila-sunrise knockoff and/or an 80s Sox look- so in general I just give baseball a pass. I'd love if baseball just kept on using the old NI for their caps.

If anything the volleyball and men's soccer teams are most on-brand, since the football team's numbers aren't true to the NIU font the way soccer and volleyball are.

The NIU-Sox jerseys and caps are kinda like the NIU Heat jerseys- use the NIU logo font in an otherwise familiar design.
I am hoping many of these become available to donors or at the very least as an auction item for some HAF fundraiser.
I mentioned these hats in another thread this week. Super cool. I think it would tie in nicely with the Cell game in November if these were made available to the public.

I highly doubt that these will be available to the public.
I doubt it as well. I'm sure MLB would take issue with trademark. But for two teams who both have attendance issues, it would make for a nice cross promotion. I have a sox fan friend whom I bring to a NIU home game or two, who is dying to get his hands on one of these.
They should sell them for the Showdown......at US Cell

Probably a condition to having permission to use the batterman.

Maybe convince the Sox to split money from the hats 50/50 or something?

But, but we're all about branding.
So what if the original NIU font was underneath the head of a Huskie dog on the logo; no just use the logo without the "NIU" beneath it; no let's just use the letters "NIU"; no, let's use the hint of the dog face on a black matte helmet; no, let's go black with silver numerals and no hint of red, I mean cardinal. Let's work neon green into the scheme ala Purdue even though it has nothing to do with school colors. I know, the hell with traditionalism, it's whatever makes the current players happy because they're not really playing for the school and its alums, they're playing for each other.

You are correct. It's all about making money and having "cool" things for the players. Maybe they too are bored playing MAC schools and they need something to spice up the game for them.. We talk about tradition and yet we are changing uniforms and logos every game. I guess the only way for us to get noticed is a gimmick.

Let's clear this up.

There has never been just one logo. No one has just one logo. The Huskie-head/NIU badge has always, from the very beginning, been the primary logo. For 15 years there have been lots of other alternates. Including an NIU wordmark, a Northern Illinois wordmark mostly used by women's sports, that weird looking full body Huskie, the pack of Huskies, etc. And every logo package anyone has features wordmarks.

These aren't some new invention, or some abandoning of the logo- because there was never just one, and it's not Adidas stuffing our teams into weird highlighter uniforms like they've done to Louisville among others. Other than some silver numbers and camo baseball uniforms everything has been in school colors. It's just using all of the options.

Northern Illinois shows off new White Sox themed uniforms <--Link

Quote:The biggest news in the baseball world last week was likely the release of each team’s spring training uniforms. The White Sox hat and jersey was almost unanimously one of the biggest hits in the league.

The jerseys were so impressive that they grabbed the attention of another nearby baseball team. With the blessings of the White Sox, the Northern Illinois baseball team debuted their new black uniforms and fans may recognize something very familiar.

Unfortunately for fans of the new look, the NIU jerseys and hats will not be going on sale. But that doesn’t take away anything from just how cool the hats and jerseys really are.
