No inside information, just local sports talk show talk this morning in Knoxville. Rumor is that Jimmy Cheek will be gone as Chancellor by the end of the year and that Noland could be a top candidate to take his position. Dave Hart would also be let go as UT AD, leaving Noland with a voice on the new AD selection. Again, rumor and talk only. But it is interesting they are talking about it with Noland mentioned by name and what a good job he has done at ETSU.
Pretty obvious that the entire state is jealous of what Noland has done at ETSU. We've really been blessed with great leadership and coaches over the past few years.
*Noland

A couple of years ago I would have said he was a shoe in but due to recent events I feel they are going to fill this with a woman. Just my opinion.

I'm hoping that Noland is so invested with ETSU...he will not even consider anything else. Knoxville is no Johnson City. You laugh? There are those of us who are eaten up with Unaka, Roan, Mitchell and even little ole Buffalo Mountains.....plus ETSU is just a great place. Please Mister Noland....continue on. ETSU loves you.
He has unfinished business in Johnson City, though he was a candidate when they hired Cheek.
Dave Hart isn't going anywhere. Football is well on its way to recovery, basketball while not good was better than anticipated. Academics have improved all the way around and he has gone over the top in implementing strategies to try and prevent anymore domestic assaults, even though there's not been one single felony conviction.
Cheek has 4-5 more years, they'll get through the lawsuit, let things die down, then make changes.
Pretty sure ETSU was Noland's testing ground for UT to begin with. Those were the rumors when he was first announced as a candidate. I don't think it's much of a secret that he wants the UT job.

He's done a lot for ETSU in a very short amount of time. Young, ambitious guys are great to have, but you have to realize that there's no off switch. A mountain climber has to climb mountains.

I'm not saying that Noland doesn't want the UT job or won't eventually take it but this is a different situation than say a coach moving from ETSU to UT. Any state university president job is a big deal and the difference between being the president at ETSU and UT is not that big of a jump. Jimmy Cheek made $434K last year and Noland made $311K. While a significant difference, that 100k is not change your lifestyle money.

Yeah - it would take more than $100K for Noland to revamp his wardrobe to Orange and White from all his Blue and Gold. The man has some serious style.
The money isn't the issue as much as the prestige in name. The right person at UTK can jump into politics pretty easy. The timing just isn't right with the lawsuit going on. UTK is locked in place until that's over with barring one of them getting Cancer or some other catastrophic illness.
Noland has unfinished business. My father continues to suggest that the Noland family will wait until their son completes high school before moving on. I don't know, but that's certainly time to see the ETSU vision through to a winning football team and perhaps the advent of a law school. I think there's a lot of actionable work Noland can continue to build his CV upon at ETSU before assuming the next level, should he choose to continue building.
I hope he does not... I ******* hate UT and their damn university. It is such a piece of **** and stain to East Tennessee. Dr. Noland is a million times better off here at ETSU.
Woah........ok, nevermind, I agree.

There is a BIG plus I'm sure to their family to have their son at University School. It was recently ranked #9 in TN and 1046 in the nation. I'm sure there are good schools, including private ones in Knoxville, but we have a big gem right here. Bonus, that his son is in school right next door to him, literally.

Money has NOTHING to do with whether Noland would pursue the job at UT or not IMO. The opportunity to run a flagship University is appealing to anyone as ambitious as Nolan and only comes around so often. In addition Noland received his Ph'D from UT and as mentioned, he previously pursued the job the last time around.

If UT comes calling Noland is out the door IMO.

He was not in the running for the job Jimmy Cheek has now (UT Knoxville President), he was in the running for President of the University of TN system, which Joe DiPietro got.

I agree, if that job opened up and they wanted him he would probably bolt. Good thing for us is that Cheek is not going anywhere for several years.
Yes, there's a difference between the positions of President of the UT System and Chancellor of UT-Knoxville.

Cheek to teach only

Can't get the link at the bottom of that article for the News-Sentinel to work. I'm sure those who want to can track it down.
It's starting to get interesting. Maybe the rumors have legs.

Something has changed here. I still don't think Noland is ready for this job yet, and should let someone else go first, unless he's looking to parlay the Chancellor's job into a run into politics.
If he goes, he goes. ETSU could very well be screwed as they'll go with the safe route and hire someone like Wilsie Bishop to screw up everything that Dr. Noland has built.
I hope that's not the case, but history suggests they won't get the hire right two times in a row.
