Making It A Hate Crime To Target Police…

This ought to send BLM and Libs into a rage...

Quote:Blue Lives Matter” it’s a saying we’ve all heard before, and if House Bill 953 passes the saying could become a law.

Louisiana is one of the first states pushing to make it a hate crime to target police officers and first responders.

If passed, House Bill 953 will increase penalties for crimes directed at law enforcement and firefighters.

Many residents in Acadiana say they support the proposal.

Critics, however, say hate crimes typically are in place to protect race, gender, religion and sexual orientation, not occupations.

Dionna Nelson’s father was a police officer.

She said laws need to be in place to protect those who protect and serve:

“You never know if he’s coming home. His life was always on the line. There’s just too many police officers being killed, and firefighters and first responders being killed in the line of duty. There’s just no sense for it.”

Currently in Louisiana, people who are convicted of crimes against a protected class face an additional five years in prison.

The bill will have to be taken up by the full house and be evaluated by the Senate before it can actually become a bill.

"This ought to send BLM and Libs into a rage..."

The problem is, THAT'S the GOP motivation behind the bill...

No it isn't.

So who gets to decide what "hate" is?
Crimes against these people are worse than crimes against those people. These people are a protected class...those people are an unprotected class.

Sounds like America.
I don't like this law as I do not like any "hate crimes" laws..

How do laws like this protect anyone? Murder is a capital offense no matter the motivation. If I kill my wife for insurance money or just to get out of the marriage, is that less of a crime than if I kill my neighbor because he's black?

I agree.
I thought killing a cop was already a capital murder.

And I thought things already being a crime was no reason to not also make them a hate crime..
Attacks against police and first responders usually carry enhanced criminal penalties. I'm a bit confused as to what this legislation would accomplish.

However, I would note that Louisiana's hate crime laws do NOT cover gender identity. And their non-discrimination laws don't cover sexual orientation or gender identity in public accommodations or private employment.

Sure, have a debate on expanding hate crimes laws to cover gender identity and blue lives.
I don't believe a "hate" designation is appropriate in any context. I don't believe in assigning deadly sins to crimes.

It's already illegal to murder people.

Hate crimes crap is stupid. 1st degree murder is just that, same for 2nd degree, manslaughter, assault, B and E, grand theft auto whatever.
