AS I have mentioned before, subsidies can be tricky, because you have accounting people manipulating the public's money and you can rarely get the truth out of a good CPA.
Carolina's subsidy (roughly $9M) is the payment from the Ram's Club endowment to the University to pay all scholarship costs for all athletes in all 28 sports. For these monies the Ram's Club gets certain concessions from the University so that they can encourage donations.
Because these funds are paid by the Ram's Club, the $9M is able to be used for other parts of UNC rather than becoming a budget line item for the Athletic Department. But because the monies come from outside the athletic budget, it is counted a subsidy. If the Ram's Club gave the same $9M to the college of Arts and Sciences instead, Carolina would have the same income and no subsidy.
The bottom line JR is that those numbers are skewed without the proper footnotes.

I realize that X. But the gross revenue figures and expense figures tell a quite amazingly different story. The subsidies are the footnote. Most athletic departments spend close to whatever it is they make, especially in the publicly funded universities where state budgets are cut if the money isn't spent.

And I did not that subsidies are handled differently with the various schools.
