This deserves it's own thread. To help bring encouragement to those not so thrilled with this hire.

What have we complained about for the last 5 seasons? Lack of experience, no X&O, he’s a politician not a coach. I can go on and on.
Memphis just brought back stability and respectability got an X&O future hall of fame coach. Hired the exact polar opposite of the previous coach that the entire city of Memphis had come to loath. They also served notice to the basketball world that we can and will pay whatever it takes to get our guy.

I’ve followed this program for 35 years. This is the best hire that Memphis has ever made in any sport outside of John Calipari who fell in our lap.

In 10 seasons at Kentucky:
3 seasons that finished with elite 8.
2 seasons that finished with sweet 16.
1 national championship and final four.

Made NCAA every season and was run out of town. We would have been throwing him parades every season for that. In fact we did for Calipari. And let’s not forget how big of a dumpster fire UK was after he left. UK had to steal the Memphis program from them to get where they are. Everyone with a brain knows that.

After the stain on his reputation from a ridiculous fan base at UK, he has worked hard to restore himself and it's been hard, but he's fairing very well.

Let’s talk non Kentucky accomplishments:

At Tulsa: 2 sweet 16’s in four seasons.

At Georgia: in two seasons, 2 ncaa's and one sweet 16.

At Minnesota: 3 of 6 NCAA’s. Before tubby they had been to the NCAA tourney 9 times. And 4 of those 9 were vacated. Tubby arrives and makes the tourney 3 times in 6 seasons. At MinnefreakingSota!!!

At Tech: made NCAA in only 3 seasons. In the previous 30 years, they had made the tourney 7 times. After a 9 year absence he got them there in 3 years.

This is a homerun hire for Memphis. It ain’t sexy. But I’ve followed this guy’s career since his Tulsa days. He is a basketball genius. And Memphis will compete at a high level as long as he is here.

Compared to where we were last week. I'm ecstatic and am over joyed to be happy over Memphis basketball again.

Time to sell the Forum out again folks.
The sweet 16s at Tulsa and Georgia are the most impressive jobs he's don, IMO.

I think they hit it out of the park here.

I've respected Tubby for a long time.
Think it was Calkins who said this hire won't bring fans flocking back to the Forum. While flocking back is pretty subjective language, I do think that attendance will dramatically improve and that the overall fans will be excited.
Tulsa is a pathway to major success

I think this hire will bring some back the first year, although not as many as the "sexy" hires.
At the VERY least, it will stop the bleeding when it comes to those of us (myself included) who were considering dropping their tix this year.

Neither was Marshall or Buzz Williams!! Nothing but winning will do that.

Comparing the last few months with now...I'm more relieved than anything.

But ya can't keep a good excitement down. Starting to build again to the half full days of glasses!
Repeat after me:

Opie is gone
Opie is gone
Opie is gone

Now this:

No more loosey goosey

No more mindfulness

No more personal matter

No more outer space

If we have a question about COACHING we can actually ask Tubby and probably get a decent answer

I feel better
My only question is if he has the patience for the AAU unofficial streetcorner bureaucracy he probably needs to get top local talent.

Without 5*, occasional sweet 16s may be the best we do (vast improvement over his predecessor). With 5*s, ,and his ability to coach them up and deliver them to the NBA, the potential over time increases to Final Fours and above. There will be a time when we tire of it, though. 2 years to make the tourney, 5 years overall to make sweet 16, and probably 5-7 yrs overall, unless we've made a recent final 4. This is if factors are normal, noextenuating circumstances.

Marshall or Buzz would have absolutely moved the needle on attendance next season.

Hopefully he can go behind those clowns with the local high school coaches. And let his assistants do what's necessary to appease the dudes that live with granny

I am buying the season tickets I gave up 4 years ago. Finally will be fun in the Forum again.

Hope so...

Interesting on 92.9 they're noting that every place gets worse when he leaves, bc he doesnt recruit top tier, plug and play talent, and successors arent the quality of x/o coach he is to get avg talent to outperform.

Something to be aware of in the future, the next guy will have to hit the ground running and be a recruiter. Hopefully he shows recruiting ability either himself or in his staff selections. More than likely we will forget this tidbit unless a media or radio guy mentions it, then hammer them for their anti Memphis agenda.

We may at some point think our talent is better than it is, when it's really the coaching. Or my preference is that we hopefully have both, talent and coaching.

I think it will bring back more than Forbes, Kennedy, or whoever else was left on the list.
It's a wait and see hire for me. We could have done better, but we could have done a lot worse. Three things bother me about this hire. We shouldn't have to pay over 3 million for Tubby. He's not a recruiter. He plays slow, "boring" basketball.
