That's the current rumor. Really surprised they would hire a coach who turns 65 in 2 months. I plan to be retired before I reach that age. But no doubt he is a solid coach who is well regarded around the country.
Thought is he will hire Penny Hardaway as his top assistant to make it more palatable to Tiger fans. Penny will be a coach in waiting, while learning from one of the best.
Well, it would be a good hire. Tubby proved this season that he has some coaching left in him.
Can't really argue with this guy, although I initially thought age was certainly an issue-

64 isn't old.

just get Penny Hardaway or Tony Madlock (former Tiger, experienced asst coach) to be your first chair asst coach.

Some people are old at 30. Others are young at 70. Tubby is probably one of the young ones.

Chris Beard is the leading candidate to replace Tubby Smith at Texas Tech, source told BR. Beard has $1 million buyout in his UNLV contract.
For years, Memphis fans have complained that Josh Pastner's teams took quick, ill-advised shots, played disorganized defense and typically didn't win at the level their talent level suggested they should.

That should no longer be a problem given who the school tabbed as Pastner's replacement on Thursday morning.

Memphis has hired Texas Tech's Tubby Smith, an accomplished coach who's basically the complete opposite of his youthful predecessor. He's 64 years old, he hasn't always recruited at an elite level but he is well respected among his peers for being excellent tactically and strong in player development.
Good move for Tubby. To a program that has had a basketball presence for a long time, from a place where basketball is an afterthought.

Several of those coaches have been at their schools forever. Tubby will be starting a new job just as he is turning 65- that's when most folks retire. Obviously Larry Brown started at SMU, at an older age, and is doing just fine. I've come around to thinking this is a "good" hire all things considered. Somewhat surprised Tubby wants to "start over" at his age, but he can probably load up on talent in Memphis pretty quick.
Memphis badly needs to put a new face on the program post-Calipari.
