Interesting...

1) Duke is in the mix for Marques Bolden, a five-star center picking between Kentucky and the Blue Devils. Duke was already at its scholarship limit, so it was going to have to make a move to free up a scholarship if Bolden decided to commit. Now that scholarship is open.

Thornton skips his senior year of high school to bail K out of a real jam only to be shown the door when he didn't play up to expectations. All because K has a chance to land someone else that might be able to help him in the future.
So much for caring about your players.

Back story...the first coach to suggest this was Rick Pitino...Louisville tried like hell to land him....more than likely headed back to the West Coast.

But you're correct...this looks like a classic "Waiver Wire" move by Coach K.
And your proof that Thornton was forced out? The truth is that Thornton left because his parents felt he wasn't being featured enough. Does that seem like a reasonable position to anyone else?
Why would Coach K want to force him out? He's a talented player. He's just not quite as good as his relatives want to think. That's not Duke's fault.

You may be correct....but it is not a good look...no secret that Duke wants Bolden...no secret that Duke was at the scholarship limit...Capel meets with Bolden yesterday and today this comes out...just saying...

I'd need to have a lot more information than we are likely to get before I criticize Duke or Coach K here.

Just not a good look...plus his family is really raking Coach K over the coals right now...
I kind of think this is karma working at its best in a weird way. We recruited this kid hard, and convinced the kid and the family into re-classifying just to see him go to Duke. When we recruited him the offer was to come and redshirt the first year get acclimated to college and get stronger, and the family was on board with this as well. They were the ones pushing for him to redshirt so he would have a better chance down the road, but then Duke came into the picture after winning the championship and coach K scooped him up with an offer. Kind of weird that after a year where this should have been the kids senior year in high school is now wasted playing what amounted to mop up duty till reinforcements came into play. Also now coach K looks more like the Calipari and the way he runs off his players etc when in need to fill a position. When yes he could have came to Louisville and set out, but the family got greedy. Oh and please don't for the old saying karma is a ***** for that is true as can be.

How many times do we see situations where the kid's family gets too involved, not just with his initial decision, but after the decision has been made? When families start second guessing coaches, or continue to try to stage manage their son's career, things get ugly.

I don't think any of us know, or will ever know, what Coach K promised this kid, or what he has said to him over the course of the past year. I seriously doubt that he would have told Thornton that he wanted his scholarship back so he could give it to somebody else. I doubt he would have told him that he couldn't compete for playing time next year, just like everybody else.

When we say this "isn't a good look" for Duke, I think that says more about us, and our willingness (even our eagerness) to criticize without real knowledge of a situation, than it does about Duke or K.
I don't mind Coach K doing this NEARLY as much as him getting a pass for things like this from the media. The narrative is always 'this guy is an angel and that other guy is the devil' and they ride with those types of BS narratives ignoring evidence to the contrary on both sides.

Always useful to get information from unbiased sources like those.
There's lying in recruiting, I'm shocked.

Recruiting: you'll be a star for us!

Freshman year: work hard and you'll be a starter.

Sophomore year: work hard and you'll get playing time coming off the bench.

Spring of Sophomore year: the coach lied to me so I'm transferring out of here!

Isn't that how it usually works? (fill in the blank for which sport)

Yeah, like there isn't a precedent for this type of behavior. Signed Andre Dawkins.

Yeah, like K wouldn't lie. Signed Dillion Brooks
