Seems like a job he might be enticed to leave for. Great basketball city, great arena, great fan support, great recruiting area; he could dominate the conference they are in, although his hiring could help get them a Big 12 invite. Would make it an even better basketball league.

Whoops. Meant to but a question mark at the end of my subject line. Certainly no more than a rumor at this time.

From what our Wichita State fan on our board has posted, he doesn't think Marshall will leave for Memphis, or maybe anywhere. He's making a huge amount of money, and I believe his family likes it where they are. But you never know. There are sometimes things in play we don't know about. He's obviously a terrific coach. You need to go back and put a question mark after your headline.04-cheers

Neither do I. He's had a hell of a lot better offers than Memphis and has chosen to remain at Wichita State. I was taken aback by the header, and would be absolutely shocked (no pun intended) if he took a job at Memphis.

And did I miss it somewhere that Josh Pastners huge buyout at Memphis had been paid to even create a vacancy?

Pastner left to take the Georgia Tech job.

Pastner left to take the Georgia Tech job.

Memphis caught a big break on that one! As Brian Gregory, who gave up a great job at Dayton to go to Atlanta found out, Georgia Tech is a very, very tough job. Maybe Pastner figured he was getting out of town at Memphis ahead of the posse!
I want Archie Miller to be the next Memphis coach...

he's what Memphis fans thought they were getting in Pastner...young, energetic, great recruiter...but he's proven he can get his team to an Elite Eight, and win NCAA games (5-3 NCAA record)

he makes 700k at Dayton, with a 600k buyout (if I read right)...we could more than double his pay, and increase his money for asst coaches...double his recruiting budget...all while playing at an NBA arena, in a fertile recruiting area.

I think that's more realistic than Marshall...Steve Forbes (ETSU Coach, assoc HC under Pearl and Marshall) would be my back-up plan.
Marshall reportedly met with Memphis officials yesterday. Will that lead to anything. Who knows? Read that Marshall has a daughter in the 11th grade. Really hard time for a girl to move. That may keep him in Wichita, a place he really likes, more than anything.
today's rumor...Tubby Smith is coming to Memphis to interview...no idea if true, but that's the rumor.
Tubby's a proven winner. If he has a good place to which to recruit, he can get the job done.

That's nuts. Do they want to go from having one of the youngest DI coaches to one of the oldest? No offense to Tubby, but they can do a lot better than that.

Gregg Marshall is 53...Tubby is 64...I don't see the issue.

Tubby led UK to a title, 3 Elite Eights, 2 Sweet 16...and he took both Tulsa and Georgia to Sweet 16s.

I mean, Larry Bown is 75 and killin' it at SMU...look at SDSU's coach...

I really don't think it'll be Tubby, but compared to Pastner, he's a home run IMHO.
and just like that, Dan Wolken kills the rumor...

I said it was a ludicrous rumor. Still stranger things have happened. Like GaTech coming in and "stealing" Josh Pastner.

exactly...I'm at the 'I'll believe anything' point after that...

I just wish we would hire Steve Forbes and move on to giving him big $$$ for asst coaches.

I believe she's actually in 10th. She used to go to the same school as my nieces, played volleyball with one when they were younger. I believe she is in the class between my oldest niece and her sister.

But I do think that her still being in HS plays a part, but I was never concerned with Memphis. It's a good job and a great place for basketball, but so is Wichita. I don't think Memphis was ever willing to offer what it would take to even get Marshall to consider it. Which would probably have been over 4M and full control. Something it sounds like the Memphis AD would never agree to. But beyond that, Memphis appears to need a bit of a rebuild and Marshall has said he'd never do that again after what he had to do when he took over Wichita from Turgeon who left him next to nothing to work with.

Marshall also only wants to coach for maybe another 8 years tops. He'll either retire at Wichita or take a shot at one of the blue-bloods should a spot open and an offer come. I also think he wants to see us through to a new conference if things continue to go well behind the scenes. He loves Wichita and Wichita loves him.

Tubby wasn't a bad hire for Memphis, but I think they'd have done better had they went after Forbes.

I doubt Memphis (four years off NCAA probation) would go after a Forbes, Pearl, or Sampson...all guys fired, and slapped with NCAA show cause orders.

say what you like about Pastner, he ran a clean program (graduates kids, perfect APR)...Tubby seems completely above board as well.
What kind of deal did Pastner get to go to Georgia Tech?

11 million over 6 years...

we did a "negotiated settlement" in which we also pay him 1.255 million over the next 2 years.

his buyout at Memphis was 10.6 million...we are some lucky SOBs.

So is Pastner. These coaches make more in one year than most Americans make in a lifetime.
