You don't have to be. Francona is masterful when it comes to knowing when pitchers need to come out, which is a hugely important skill in the American League, where you don't have the luxury of simply sending a pinch hitter up there to take the pitcher's spot. You have to manage your bullpen exceptionally well in the AL, and it's a top reason why he's what, 11-2 in World Series games now?

When I stated that I think the Indians have the best staff in the game, I probably should have been giving a lot of the credit to Francona. Seeing his decisions pay off over and over now in big spots, with 2 different franchises, cements him as a HOFer, in my mind.

Aside from their bullpen interfering with Heyward in the first last night, I have nothing but respect for Cleveland. Through 5, they've looked like the better team. Let's get this to game 7 and see what happens.
Not sure what the deal was with that ball hit into the bullpen area but it looked a little funny. If he had a play on the ball-the umpire could call interference and the hitter is out.
Cubs are a young team that likes to hit bombs and the job is to get them to stay disciplened in the strike zone but I have seen them all year swinging for the fences-very hard to change that now.
I also would be surprised to see Schwarber be a huge part of the offense, not shocked but he is a .240 hitter for his time in MLB with some power-I think he sees all breaking balls and if they are in the zone he might be a quick out. Could hit one in the woods or strike out every time. They guy has amazing power for such a young hitter but he is not even close to being as good as Bryant or Rizzo-IMO.
Great game last night and looking for 2 more!

Yup, he is, but he's done something thus far that not many regular cubbies have in the WS, that's hit!

I don't think the pen interference was obvious enough for the ump to make the call, but it was pretty obvious what they were doing. Didn't impact the game, but that's not very sporting of those guys, whoever they were.

Schwarber is important if for no other reason than the protection he provides for Zobrist. He's played in 69 games in his career, so I can't say absolutely what he is. I know one thing, he's hit in the playoffs in his young career. He improves the lineup.

Russell, Baez and Contreras try to muscle up and play hero ball a little. Russell makes quicker adjustments than Baez and I think he's had good ABs in the WS with little to show for it. Fowler, Bryant, Rizzo, Zobrist and Ross understand situational hitting...Heyward does as well, he's just been over-matched most of the year. Hopefully his three hits the last two nights are a good sign moving forward.
I didn't think it was a obvious attempt at all to impede the player but more of a lack of awareness. The fielder had no chance to make the play but that is not what they should be concerned with-they should get out of the way completely. To think more than more one player would try that at the same time means it was a thought out deal and I just don't buy that at all.
Maybe Madden catches Ross tonight but I doubt it-he loves the flashy type player. I hope he plays Contreras because he has been an auto out along with Baez and the pitcher it amounts to about 7-9 outs per game. The DH spot will be more of an asset the the Cubs than the Indians-could be the difference. They gotta score first I think and keep the lead to keep Miller out of the game. If you see Miller I think the Indians are champs. I would love to see it go 7 but I think it will end tonight.
Will the REAL Tomlin please stand up, oh wait HE JUST DID!!!
looks like the Cubs remembered how to hit
BOOOOOOOOM
I really don't understand Maddon's decision to bring Chapman in to end the 7th.

That has W-E-I-R-D written all over it.
Made zero sense to pull Arrieta that early. Maybe it will workout for Madden but bringing in Chapman was strange at best and then to bring back out for the 8th-just stupid. Madden must be getting short on oxygen in the dugout.
Now he's hurt and may not be available for game 7. So, so stupid to bring him in a 5 run game last night.
1. We're playing game 7 tonight.
2. Chapman IS available. Twisted his ankle but said he's available. Hoops, have you seen otherwise, or is this just based on your eye test from last night? Genuine question.
3. Joe Maddon's name is spelled with an 'a' and an 'o'. There is no 'e' in Maddon.
4. Chicago's GM is NOT Theo Epstein. Theo is President of Baseball Operations. Jed Hoyer is the GM.

I understood bringing Chappman in to face Lindor in the 7th. It's a 5 run game with 2 men on, against Cleveland's best hitter. He got through the 8th with 11 pitches. With the bottom of the order up, I would've taken him out before Rizzo's 2-run shot. For everyone criticizing Maddon, who would you have pitched to face Lindor in the 7th? My answer would be Strop, but did you see the contact Strop gave up in the 9th? Is it controversial? Of course! Was it stupid? Absolutely not! I didn't love it, but I certainly don't hate it.

We'll see how tonight goes. Go Cubs!
Biggest World series game since 01

Randy Johnson pitched in that game after starting in game 6. Everyone says jake is not available, but I think you could see Lester for 2, Jake for 1 and Chapman for 1 if the Cubs are able to get a lead.

They said on Mike and Mike this morning, "unlikely to be available", but since then i have heard contradictory reports. With a 5 run lead i don't think it matters much who ya put out there, but not Chappy! Unless they score a few. Now, you have an injured, tired guy who relies on his body to throw 100+ to get guys out that has pitched in 5 innings in 3 days and he's used to pitching 2 maybe 3 innings a week! It was a dumb move. I'm rooting for the Cubbies and have gone on record as saying i love Maddon so i hope this doesn't bit him in the arse! I do agree with you Bricks, i wouldn't be shocked to see Lester and any other starter for that matter out of the pen.
Wild Thing Charlie Sheen will be in the stadium tonight

Saw they may actually have him toss the first pitch as Wild thing?
We shall see what happens but I did hear that Chapman is available for sure. Nobody can explain why he pitched in the 8th,not even Genius Joe and then he comes out for the 9th?
If it comes down to Chapman and he blows it,Maddon will be the new goat in Chicago.
I get it with Lindor but after that he has to take him out. He has no confidence in his bullpen and has shown that to them now on the biggest stage ever.
Go Indians !!!
