So Wood is quoted as saying "We would not be playing Albany" if Mark Benson was not the Danes athletic director. "It's nice to be able to schedule a game amongst your peers with someone you've worked with".

You know what else would have been nice? To have used that date to schedule against one of our in state FCS schools .... instead of their buddy.

Some things at ODU rubbing me wrong these days.
But we nailed down that big Towson series for basketball

Mark Benson did a hell of a job for ODU and I think it was a good gesture to schedule them. I don't particularly miss any of the in state FCS schools.
Yea that's pretty annoying. I'd much rather have a game against W&M, JMU, or Liberty. Albany? Yawn.

So 1/6 home games can be chalked up to a "good gesture." I don't think that's a good thing
Man, I think y'all are making this a bigger deal than it really is. We've played Hampton and NSU for a few years, we're playing VMI in 2018. Would I like to play W&M, JMU, and UR again? Sure. But to get all up-in-arms because we scheduled a game with someone who faithfully worked for the Monarchs for decades? Y'all are trying to find something to complain about now.
To be fair, several of the Va FCS schools don't have open dates 9/2/17. Guess the question might be, how long has this been in the works?

Cool
Who cares which FCS team we play? It's a glorified exhibition game, meant to iron out wrinkles on the team and prepare for the real competition. How would playing W&M or UR, who wont pass up the P5 payday for us, make this game any different?

Couldn't agree more! Relationships matter, and as noted elsewhere, Mark Benson was a great asset for ODU while he was here. I don't mind this arrangement at all.

It seems obvious why an in-state game is more intriguing. Many of us have tons of family and friends who went to JMU and W&M. We were also in a conference with them for the last two decades.

W&M isn't going to abandon the bigger pay-out from playing a P5 team. Their budget won't allow it. It's a moot point. And even if they did, what will you get out of playing a local team paid to lose to us? You get to trash talk for one week about how we're better? Where's the fun in that? We are supposed to be better. Hard not to be when you have more schollies.

It's a tune-up game and a bye week. The opponent doesn't really matter, as long as we win and avoid major injuries.
If scheduling Albany is all we have to complain about, we are in great shape.
First, I don't think JMU or W&M want to play us. Second, those teams are much better than your run of the mill FCS program. As others have stated this is supposed to be a warm up win.

Why do you guys think any of those schools want to play us. No inside info here, but I'd bet a lot of money that the a** clown at W&M wouldn't play us no matter the pay day. A win is not a program changer and a loss further cements their position as second tier in the recruiting battles. The former caa schools should be gunning for the miraculous P5 upsets and not messing with us.

Welcome back to Norfolk mark Benson. You were a game changer for the university.

W&M did a good job against UVA last year.
Depending on when we played them, I'm not sure it would have been a win. We were pretty banged up by the end.

W&M can get a much larger payday playing P5 schools. A loss is a loss to them, but $ matters.
It is a game with a I-AA school. This is a so not a cause for getting worked up over or really much more than a few lines in a "ODU Football notebook" article in The Pilot. Granted it is kinda quiet right now and the spring game is still a week away so I get why it was fleshed out. At the end of the day we are still talking about a I-AA team that is going to get a check for $250,000 to come to Foreman to take a beating.
Hope we can given them a beating. We are not exactly a "powerhouse" yet...
